Bulldogs Upended at Kalamazoo

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The repeat chances of the Adrian College football team were squashed on Saturday afternoon as they fell 14-10 at Kalamazoo College snapping a nine-game win streak over the Hornets. It is the second straight tough loss for the Bulldogs who are now 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. The team will wrap up the season next week as league-unbeaten Albion College comes to Docking Stadium.

The Bulldogs never had the lead in this contest against a Hornet team that improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. Kalamazoo led 14-0 at halftime as Adrian has simply not been a good first half team offensively in their last three games with just 13 points. Adrian managed 73 yards on 33 plays in the first half and went 0-of-7 on third down and 0-of-3 on fourth down. The Adrian defense kept them close as Kalamazoo had 120 yards on 34 plays.

Adrian turned it over on their first possession and gave the Hornets the ball at the 20-yard line. Aaron Tenney was intercepted with a 24-yard return by Hartlee Lucas. Kalamazoo used four plays to get into the end zone as Brock Rucinski found Josh Wise for a seven-yard touchdown with 12:16 left in the first quarter. The Hornets took over the ball at the end of the first and carried it into the second when they went up 14-0. Aaron McGuire capped off a 10-play, 80-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown to Alex Dietrich.

The Bulldogs had two possessions stalled inside the Kalamazoo 30-yard line after trailing 14-0 and went into the break down two touchdowns. McGuire was intercepted by Deontae Bridgeman on the Hornets' first drive of the third at midfield, but gave it right back as Tenney was picked again by Lucas on the next play at the Kalamazoo 10-yard line. The Bulldogs got on the board at the 9:35 mark of the third as Dustin Salliotte booted a 31-yard field goal to make it 14-3.

Adrian began the fourth quarter with the ball and on the first play of the quarter on fourth-and-one, a pass interference call extended the drive. The Bulldogs drove downfield and Tenney tossed a seven-yard touchdown to Nathan Hartline with 12:38 to play cutting the lead to 14-10. The next drive for Adrian saw them drive down to the Kalamazoo 17-yard line but a huge 15-yard penalty snuffed out any chance at points.

Adrian took over with 3:36 left to play and put together a lengthy drive aided by a roughing the passer penalty on fourth-and-18. The Bulldogs used 12 plays but could not find the end zone. Tenney's fourth-and-one pass to Hartline was incomplete at the Kalamazoo 29-yard line turning it over with 43 seconds left. Adrian used all three timeouts to get the ball back at their own 47-yard line with 17 seconds to play. Tenney ran for 11 yards and got out of bounds at the Kalamazoo 42-yard line on second down, but two straight incompletions ended the comeback hopes.

Kalamazoo outgained Adrian, 269-257, as the Hornets threw for 216 yards and the Bulldogs rushed for 145 yards. Damon Brown rushed for 89 yards pushing him over 800 this season and 1,700 in his career. Jack Carter led the defense with 11 tackles and three tackles for loss. Nate Smith had four tackles while forcing and recovering a fumble. Bridgeman had six tackles and his fourth interception of the season.
