Kusch scores two as Bulldogs knock off No. 8 St. Scholastica

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. – The Bulldogs finished their weekend series with St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon as they looked to bounce back from a Friday night loss and take home the crucial two points. Adrian found themselves down 2-1 with seven minutes to play, before two unanswered goals sent the Bulldogs home with a 3-2 victory. This win advances the Bulldogs to 7-3 on the season and 5-3 in the NCHA.

The first period was played scoreless through the first seven minutes before the Saints broke through with the first goal at 12:50 on an even strength goal that put St. Scholastica ahead 1-0. Adrian was able to respond before the first intermission as Kelsey Kusch scored her 10th of the season from Kristin Lewicki and Devyn Fitzhenry. This goal tied the game with 1:36 left in the period and evened the score 1-1.

The Bulldogs surrendered the only goal of the second period as the Saints took the lead, 2-1 at the 10:52 mark on a power play opportunity. St. Scholastica held Adrian in check the rest of the period and carried this one goal lead to the second intermission despite the Bulldogs putting 11 shots on goal to just eight from the Saints for the period.

The final period saw the Bulldogs show their toughness as they battled to tie the game for the first seven minutes of the period, and held the Saints scoreless while doing so. Kusch netted her second of the game and 11th of the season at the 7:52 mark from Lewicki to tie the game and turn the momentum solely in favor of Adrian. The Bulldogs kept this surge alive through the remainder of the period. St. Scholastica took a tripping penalty with 2:10 left, and Adrian capitalized on this mistake as Sarah Shureb scored the game-winner with 1:29 remaining from Kaylyn Schroka and Hannah McGowan.

Jade Walsh earned the win as she stopped 22 shots and held the St. Scholastica power play to just one goal on six opportunities.

This will be the Bulldogs last game until January 3 when they travel to play Augsburg at 8 p.m.
