Women's hockey overcomes three-goal deficit for 4-3 win

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The No. 9 women's hockey team (19-5-1, 14-5-1) allowed Marian University (3-18-2, 2-14-2), to go up 3-0 before rallying with four unanswered goals on route to a 4-3 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday afternoon at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.

In the end, the Adrian power play and offense overpowered the Sabres, outshooting them, 57-35.

NCHA leading-scorer Kelsey Kusch led the comeback victory. She got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard late in the second period and then continued with the team's first of three third period goals.

The second of her two goals was on the power play and her 19th on the season and it moved her to second nationally in power-play goals with seven.

Sarah Connelly assisted on both Kusch goals.

Courtney Millar would tie the game at 3 with her ninth goal of the year with less than eight minutes in the third period on an unassisted tally setting up the stage for Emily Marks' game-winning goal on the power play with under four minutes to play.

Adrian goaltender Allie Carter notched her third win of the season after splitting time with Brittany Zeches. Carter would log over 39 minutes of play, while Zeches played just under 20 minutes.

Zeches' shutout string would end after almost three full games (170-plus minutes) of shutout hockey. She ranks first in the nation in shutouts (9) and is fourth amongst all Division III netminders in save percentage with almost 95 percent.

The women's hockey team's next game will be a home NCHA playoff game with the opponent yet to be decided. The Bulldogs will finish either second or third in the conference and that will depend upon next weekend's games between first place University of Wisconsin-River Falls and third-place Lake Forest. If you're a scoreboard watcher the games will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
