ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's hockey needed a bounce back performance after dropping their last two games and got the services of Scott Shackell back in a 6-0 win over Marian (Wis.) on Friday night (Dec. 5) at Arrington Ice Arena. The senior netminder made 18 saves earning his first shutout of the season and sixth of his career while improving to 7-0 in net this season. Adrian (9-2, 7-0 NCHA) got six goals by six different players in the victory over the Sabres. They scored twice in each period with five of the goals coming on 5-on-5 hockey.

Freshman Kyle Brothers scored the game-winning goal at 11:27 of the first period for his eighth goal of the season. Brothers re-directed the puck into the net with assists from Michael Hoy and Micki Mihailovich off a clean faceoff draw. Freshman Blake Butzow scored his first collegiate goal at 16:50 of the first on a shot from the left point through a screen from Grant Telfer. Telfer and Ryan Gieseler each had an assist on the goal.

In the second period, Jeremy Olinyk scored his fifth of the season at 4:59 on a wrist shot that found the top right corner. Kevin Balas and Taylor McCloy each had an assist and gave Adrian a 3-0 lead. Balas then upped the lead to 4-0 at 18:48 on the game's lone power play goal. Duston Hebebrand and Ryan Lowe each had an assist and Balas tapped in the puck after a great pass from Hebebrand in front.

Freshman Mathew Thompson scored his ninth of the season at 7:07 of the third from Brothers and Adam Davies. Thompson took a sharp angle shot low from the bottom of the left circle for his team-leading tally. Brett Pinkerton scored his first of the season at 8:09 for the game's final goal. He took a breakaway chance and slid the puck backhand between the pads of Marian goaltender Mike Gudmandson. Hebebrand got his second assist of the night and Austin Rust also had an assist.

Adrian outshot Marian, 34-18, and kept the Sabres off the board in four power play chances. The Bulldogs went 1-for-5 with the man advantage. The two teams will square off tomorrow at 3 p.m. to conclude the weekend series.
