RENO, Nev. - The women's bowling season came to an end on Thursday at the XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships. It was the first appearance for the Bulldogs and they came away with a strong showing. They won their first match on Wednesday and dropped their next two in the double-elimination format of match play.
In the third round of match play on Thursday, Adrian and Maryland-Eastern Shore were both trying to stay alive in the championships. The Hawks were ninth-seeded while Adrian qualified 13th on Wednesday morning. The Hawks came out blistering in game one for a 255-193 win. UMES had no open frames and ended the game with six strikes and a nine-count in the 10th frame. Adrian had four strikes in game one and a open in the seventh frame.
The Hawks won game two 173-170 as Adrian squandered a chance to pull even in the match. UMES went the first 16 frames of the match without an open frame until an open in the seventh frame. They also went open in the 10th frame leaving the door open for Adrian. AC managed just two strikes in the game and themselves had back-to-back open frames in the fourth and fifth.
Adrian dropped another close game in game three and found themselves in a 3-0 hole after a 174-167 score. UMES opened the game with a turkey but then had open frames in the sixth, eighth and ninth frames. AC opened in the second and eighth with just an eight-count in the eighth. They had five straight spares in the game and two strikes.
Adrian rallied back in game four and five to make things interesting. The Bulldogs won 179-159 in game four and 187-167 in game five to build some momentum with large victories. The Hawks had just three strikes in game four and three open frames. Adrian had four straight strikes in the second through fifth frames. Adrian led 99-91 after six frames in game five and finished very strong with a strike in the eighth and ninth before a eight-spare and strike in the 10th. UMES had a single pin miss on a spare in the sixth frame and also opened in the fifth.
The sixth game belonged to Maryland-Eastern Shore by the score of 224-190. Adrian had four open frames including the ninth and 10th frames but did have five straight strikes in the fourth through eighth frames to keep things interesting. UMES led 117-94 after five frames and struck in the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth and 10th frames.
