Brothers and Olinyk Fuel 7-3 Win at Bethel (Minn.)

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The fact that Adrian men's hockey had been shutout for the second time this season at home on Tuesday must have put a fire under the Bulldogs. They took to the road on Friday (Jan. 9) and were staring down a 3-1 deficit late in the second period. The light then went on as they scored a barrage of goals for a 7-3 win over the Royals (2-10-1). The Bulldogs improved to 11-2-1 overall and 5-0 on the road by scoring six goals in a span of 18-plus minutes which started at the 16:24 mark of the second period and ended at 15:17 of the third stanza.

Tony Larson posted a power play goal on the Royals' first chance of the game at 10:35 of the first period. Adrian outshot Bethel, 10-4, but could not find the back of the net. Adrian got things going at 2:50 of the second as Kyle Brothers, who sat out against Geneseo on Tuesday, scored his 10th from Michael Hoy and Ryan Gieseler. Bethel answered with a pair of goals at 4:54 and 5:56 from Justin Bonanno and Brock Raffaele respectively. The Bulldogs have faced adversity during the season and answered the bell once again.

Brothers scored on a short-handed goal which really sparked the Bulldogs at 16:24 of the second from Josh Ranalli. Jeremy Olinyk scored 1:03 later to tie the game at 3-3 headed into the third. Brothers and Gieseler each had an assist on the game-tying goal. Adrian buried the Royals with four goals in the third on 13 shots on goal. Brothers scored the game-winning goal on the power play for a hat trick at 6:18 of the third from Olinyk and Ranalli. Brent Sauve scored his first of the season just 46 seconds later with assists from Jake Flegel and Duston Hebebrand. Flegel and David Haaf each had a solid game with a plus-4 on defense.

Olinyk's second of the game and seventh of the season at 9:36 with Ranalli's third assist of the night made it 6-3. Rob Heath notched his third of the campaign at 15:17 from Sauve to conclude the scoring at 7-3. Adrian finished with a 37-21 edge in shots on goal and were 1-for-3 on the power play. James Hamby got the start in net for Adrian and played 25:56 with three goals allowed and six saves. Head Coach Adam Krug went to freshman Dillon Kelley in a tough spot and he finished the game with no goals allowed on 12 saves to earn his first collegiate win. Brothers four-point night has now vaulted him to a tie for first in NCAA Division III with 1.85 points per game and 24 total points.
