Antoinea McElroy's 33 Points Fuels Women's Basketball Comeback at Trine in 67-60 Victory

Box Score

ANGOLA, Ind.--Senior Antoinea McElroy scored 21 of her career- and game-high 33 points in the second half to spur the Adrian College women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 67-60 win at Trine University in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at Hershey Hall on Saturday. The Bulldogs, who trailed 39-26 at halftime, even their overall record to 3-3 and improve to 2-0 in the MIAA. The Thunder are also 3-3 on the season, including 0-2 in the conference.

Junior Marissa Cotton added 13 points off the Adrian bench and senior co-captain Amber McCullough chipped in 10. Cotton also posted a game-best five assists. McElroy finished 12-for-15 shooting for 80 percent, making the most field goals for that high of percentage in school history. (Peggy Kingman owns the AC women's basketball single-game field goal mark for accuracy after she was 10-for-11 at .909 at Kalamazoo in 1980.)

For Trine, Brandi Dawson scored 11 points followed by Hayley Martin and Taylor Cole with 10 apiece. Dawson completed the double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds to lead all student-athletes, plus she had three blocked shots and a steal.

The Thunder were able to withstand a couple mini pushes by Adrian to start the third quarter. The Trine lead shrank to single-digits for the first time, but Dawson had the answer to push the lead back up to 10. That wouldn't last long as an 11-4 Bulldog run to close the third brought the score within 50-47. McElroy--who finished with an AC-high 11 rebounds--started to heat up, as she scored the last seven points of the stanza.

A layup by McCullough gave Adrian its first lead of the game, 53-52, with 6 minutes and 1 second to play. An Ashley Elliott (7 points) layup answered, but the Bulldogs took over down the stretch.

A bucket by McElroy, a jumper by McCullough, a three by Cotton and another McElroy jumper gave Adrian a 9-0 run and a 63-54 lead with 2:01 remaining. Trine never got closer than five the rest of the way and Adrian completed one of its biggest comebacks in recent history.

The Bulldogs outscored the Thunder 41-21 in the final 20 minutes to erase a 13-point halftime deficit. Adrian shot 48 percent in the second half (14-of-29) while holding the Thunder to a 19 percent clip (6-of-31) over that span to pace the comeback.

Trine appeared to be seizing control after a 14-0 run opened up the largest lead of the game for the Thunder at 30-13 with 6:01 to play in the first half.

Adrian hits the court again on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Goshen (Ind.) for a non-conference affair, while Trine returns to action this Wednesday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 7:30 p.m.
