Seven-Goal Second Leads to Berth in Harris Cup Semifinal

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's hockey team used a potent power play and a seven-goal second period to advance to the NCHA Harris Cup semifinals with an 8-4 win over Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons needed a win to extend the quarterfinal series and came out strong in the first period with a 2-1 lead and 17 shots on goal. Braden Crone and Dillon Schwartzenberger scored in the first on a pair of soft goals allowed by Scott Shackell. Crone used a wraparound from right to left at 1:29 from Buster Hebda and later at 12:30 it was Schwartzenberger bouncing the puck off the pads of Shackell from behind the net. Junior Chris Leone sandwiched a goal between the Concordia tallies at 7:01 on the power play from Kevin Balas and Duston Hebebrand. Leone's third of the season was a wrister from the left circle into the top left corner of the net.

The first few minutes of the second period still seemed to favor the guests but the momentum turned on a re-direct goal by senior Ryan Lowe at 4:40. Lowe's eighth of the season was assisted by Michael Hoy who took a shot from the left point. The barrage of goals by Adrian occurred in a span of 11 minutes when they scored six times. Hebebrand gave Adrian a 3-2 lead at 6:20 with his 12th of the season on the power play from Lowe and Adam Davies. Mathew Thompson then scored back-to-back goals to stretch the lead to 5-2. He scored on the power play at 8:59 from Josh Ranalli and Jeremy Olinyk and then got a beautiful feed from Kyle Brothers at 10:37 and buried the puck in front upping his season total to 19 goals. Leone scored his second of the game at 14:00 on an odd-man rush from Ranalli and Brothers to force Concordia to pull goaltender Jake Hebda.

The Bulldogs began the game 4-for-4 on the power play as Ryan Gieseler scored at 15:47 from Brothers who assisted on three straight goals. Devin Stuermer scored on the power play to stop the streak for Adrian at 18:21 from Brody Decker. Adrian answered one more time in the period 30 seconds later as Hoy scored his first of the season from Ranalli and Thompson to make it 8-3 after 40 minutes.

Hebda came back to start the third period and made 15 saves as Adrian was scoreless in the final 20 minutes. Decker scored his fifth of the season at 5:11 on a rebound off his own initial shot. Senior Scott Shackell racked up his 50th career win between the pipes and won for the 15th time this season. He made 24 saves in 50:45 before James Hamby finished the game and made six saves. The Bulldogs will await their opponent in the Harris Cup semifinals which will be played on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. inside Arrington Ice Arena.
