Bulldogs Fall in Heartbreaking Fashion in Season Finale at Alma, 31-27

ALMA, Mich.--Caleb Reinhart scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 23 seconds left to lift host Alma College to a come-from-behind 31-27 victory on Saturday in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association finale for both teams.

FOR ADRIAN
= Sophomore Darius Philon had 144 receiving yards on six catches and a pair of TDs.

= Freshman quarterback Hunter Hamm completed 20 of 36 passes for 241 yards, two TDs and an interception.

= Sophomore wide receiver Jerron McGaw added seven catches for 55 yards and a TD.

= Sophomore linebacker Angus Arthur led the defense with 12 total tackles.

= Junior defensive end Jacob Clark added nine tackles, including four solo.

THE OPPOSITION
= Danny Hugan II led all receivers with nine receptions and 194 yards.

= Signal-caller Dylan Zaborowski was 12-for-29 with 263 yards, a TD and an interception.

= Reinhart, who had 35 yards rushing, scored on two short runs of 1 and 3 yards.

= Zac Peterson (5 solo, 9 assists)Jacob Chittenden (5, 7) and Colton Tyson (5, 6) were in double digit tackles with 14, 12 and 11, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Alma spotted Adrian a 20-3 lead by halftime, but the Scots scored 28 of the game's last 35 points to earn the four-point win.

= Adrian tried to spoil the comeback with a series of laterals on the final play of the game, but senior Justin Thelen ended the game when he recovered a fumble on the Bulldog's final lateral attempt.

= Reinhart's game-winning score capped a four-play, 78-yard drive that took 61 seconds.

= On the previous possession, Adrian had reclaimed the lead, 27-24, after senior co-captain Stephen Milarch scored on a quarterback keeper from a yard out. That plunge came with just 1 minute and 28 seconds showing on the clock, capping a long drive of 11 plays and 75 yards in 4:52.

= Things started well enough for the Bulldogs, who scored on the game's opening drive. Adrian marched 77 yards in nine plays that culminated with a Hamm to McGaw 7-yard TD pass play at 10:20 on the first quarter clock. Sophomore D'Angelo Gaines (23 carries, 93 yards) helped set up the score with runs of 19, 4 and 7 yards.

= After a Jacob Plisko 31-yard field goal to get Alma on the scoreboard by the end of the first quarter, Adrian built its lead to 20-3 at halftime on the strength of two Philon TD receptions of 71 yards from Milarch and 47 from Hamm.

= Alma reeled off 21 straight points in the second half: Essa Kellah 14-yard TD pass from Zaborowski with 54 seconds left in the third quarter, a Chittenden 85-yard TD interception return at 12:12 in the fourth and Reinhart 1-yard plunge at 6:20. Alma took its first lead at 24-20.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= Philon finishes the season with 61 receptions for 1,050 yards--tied for third and second in program history.

= With 316 yards via the air today, Adrian set a school single-season record with 2,632. The previous benchmark of 2,463 was set in 2009.

= Junior punter Connor Storms had 206 yards on five attempts (41.2 average) to give him 5,518 for his career, moving past Craig Barnes into fifth place on the school's all-time list. Barnes punted for 5,470 yards from 1989-92.

= The Scots snap a nine-game losing streak at the hands of the Bulldogs, who outscored Alma 271-81 from 2007 to 2015.

= Junior defensive lineman Damon Fuller added two more sacks to his resume today. He moved back into first place in the MIAA with 12-1/2 and has 33 for his career (second in AC history).

= Alma's seven wins are the most for the program since 2004.

= Adrian loses to Alma for the first time in seven outings under Coach Jim Deere '89.

= Hugan II is Alma's fourth-ever 1,000-yard receiver and the first since 2009.

= The last time the Bulldogs finished the season under-.500 was in 2001 (2-8).
