COLUMBUS, Ohio--The Adrian College women's bowling team started the new calendar year at the Ohio State University Buckeye Baker Challenge held at HP Lanes over the weekend. The Bulldogs finished in third place overall for the tournament, which included 15 schools.
This tournament consisted of all baker games--36 contested to qualify. Adrian bowled a total of 4,262 pins and was in third place after Day 1. The Bulldogs continued bowling well on Sunday and finished qualifying still third with a total of 6,299. The top-eight teams made the cut from the women's division, advancing to a bracketed format best 2-of-3 baker games.
Adrian met Division I Duquesne University in the first round and won 2-0 to move into the semifinals.
There, the Bulldogs faced Urbana University. Adrian, however, missed a few spares and got knocked out by losing 2-0 to the Division II program. The 'Dogs still brought home some hardware, receiving a plaque for the highest game of the tournament with a 267 score.
"This is a great tournament to bowl in every year because it shows us how good we are in bakers," said Adrian head coach John Essenmacher III. "We came together and supported each other throughout the weekend. We had freshmen step up all weekend and a second runner-up finish here is awesome."
Pikeville was first after qualifying with a 6,634-pin total, and the host Buckeyes were 14th with a 3,807.
Next up, Adrian will be at the ISBPA/Kegel Midwest Collegiate Classic in Addison, Ill., in the Stardust Bowl on Jan. 21-22. Saturday's competition is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., followed by Sunday's action at 1:30 p.m.
