#5 Bulldogs Avenge 2016 NCAA First Round Loss, Beat #2 Elmira 5-3 at East-West Classic

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Brooke Lupi scored the first and last goal for the Bulldogs on the way to a 5-3 win over the No. 2 ranked Soaring Eagles of Elmira in the Consolation game at the East-West Classic in Northfield, Vermont. Lupi was the only Adrian representative named to the all-tournament team.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Period: Adrian 2, Elmira 1

• The Bulldogs struck first in the first 10 minutes of the opening period when Lupi scored off an assist from Sydney Smith on an Adrian power play.

• Captain Kaylyn Schroka would extend the Bulldog lead, 2-0, 12:58 into the period. Sydney Smith and Kelly O'Sullivan assisted on the goal.

• Meghan Fonfara would score for Elmira in the final three minutes of the period to cut the Adrian lead to one, 2-1.

•  Adrian had the advantage in shots on goal, 13-6, in the first period. The Bulldogs would capitalize one of the two power play opportunities they were given in the period.

Second Period: Adrian 3, Elmira 2

• Adrian's Courtney Tyll would score off Smith's third assist of the game to put the Bulldog lead back to two goals, 3-1.

• However, Maddie Evangelous would score just under two minutes later to cut the lead back down to one goal, 3-2. 

• Both teams recorded seven shots on goal in the period. Elmira went 0-2 on the power play in the period; Adrian 0-1 (1-3 overall).

Third Period: Adrian 5, Elmira 3

Sarah Shureb scored in the opening minute of the final stanza to put the Bulldogs back up two goals, 4-2.

• Just like the last period and a half, Elmira would score again to bring the deficit back to one goal. This time Fonfara would score her second goal with less than three minutes left to play in regulation to bring the score to 4-3, Adrian.

Lupi scored her second goal of the game with the empty net with just 30 seconds left in the game to seal the 5-3 victory for the Bulldogs.

• Adrian edged Elmira in shooting totals, 29-24. The Bulldogs also finished 2-4 (50%) on the power play; the Soaring Eagles went 0-3.

TOP DOGS

Lupi tied a game-high two goals. She finished the game with a +2.

Smith had a game-high three assists. Her and teammate O'Sullivan (2) were the only skaters to have more than one assist in the game. 

Kristin Lewicki finished with one assist, a +2 and 8-13 in the face off circle.

THE OPPOSITION

• Meghan Fonfara (1,2) finished with a +2.

• Maddie Evangelous (1,1) was the second leading point scorer for the team.

• Anna Tude, Johanna Eldensten and Kyra McDonald also tallied one assist.

UP NEXT

• The Bulldogs return to Norther Collegiate Hockey Association action on Friday and Saturday, January 13 and 14 when they host Concordia (Wis.) for a weekend series. 

• The Friday night game opening puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Saturday's game is 3:00 p.m.
