Comeback Attempt Falls Short for Bulldogs; Stung by Visiting Kzoo Hornets, 58-52

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich.--Visiting Kalamazoo College took advantage of a slow start by Adrian College, and had to stave off a Bulldogs comeback attempt, to take a 58-52 win in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball play on Wednesday.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Kalamazoo College 58, Adrian College 52

Location: Merillat Sport & Fitness Center; Adrian, Mich.

Records: Kalamazoo Hornets 3-4 overall, 1-1 MIAA; Adrian Bulldogs 4-4 overall, 2-2 MIAA

TOP 'DAWGS
= Junior Ashley Morris scored a team-high 21 points and led all student-athletes with 11 rebounds.

= Sophomore Shannon Garvey added 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

= Junior Katie Crawford came off the bench to grab a season-high seven rebounds, nab two steals and block a shot.

THE OPPOSITION
= Emily Kozal pumped in a game-high 24 points, including five 3-pointers, and added three rebounds with four assists.

= Isabelle Clark recorded 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.

= Mya Gough (6 points), Danielle Simon (5 points) and Libby Munoz (5 points) contributed to the visitors' rebounding balance with eight, eight and seven, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Both teams struggled shooting from the field in the first quarter with Kzoo going 6-for-16 and 37.5 percent, while Adrian was 3-for-17 and 17.6. But it was the Hornets who led 15-8 after 10 minutes of play.

= A Morris layup with 6 minutes and 24 seconds left in the second quarter gave Adrian its only lead of the night, 3-2.

= On the following possession, Kozal drained a trey from the top of the key to regain Kzoo's lead by two points. That ignited a 16-5 run into the second quarter when the Hornets grabbed an 18-8 at the 8:33 mark.

= For the game, Adrian was 27.8 percent from the field (20-72) and 21.7 from three-point land (5-23), while Kzoo was 33.9 (19-56) and 33.3 (8-24).

= Kalamazoo extended a 28-21 halftime lead to eventually an 18-point cushion--the largest of the night--at 46-28 after a Munoz three-pointer from the wing at 2:44 of the third quarter.

= The Bulldogs, however, wouldn't go away quietly by getting back into the game on the strength of a strong rebounding presence and forcing Kzoo into some missed shots. Adrian outscored Kzoo 14-3 on second-chance points with an 18-10 edge on the offensive glass.

= Morris and Garvey scored 11 and six points to help Adrian get back within 54-47 at 5:04 in the fourth quarter, but the comeback fell short as both teams didn't make a field goal for about the next five minutes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Adrian outrebounded Kzoo 50 to 41, but suffered its first loss of the season when reaching that threshold of 50.

= The .278 field goal percentage is a season-low for the Bulldogs.

= Adrian still leads the all-time series over Kzoo, 65-31, including 33-17 at home. The Bulldogs are 16-7 in their last 23 meetings with the Hornets.

UP NEXT
= Adrian will return to the court next Wednesday and Thursday at the Las Vegas Hoopla Classic against Concordia-Wisconsin (5 p.m. EST) and Hastings-Neb. (3 p.m. EST), respectively.
