Special Teams Helps @ACBulldogHockey to Peters Cup Three-Peat with 6-2 Win Over St. Scholastica

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich.--Adrian College scored two short-handed tallies to spark a four-goal second period to repel the College of St. Scholastica, 6-2, in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association men's hockey action on Friday, clinching the Bulldogs' their third Peters Cup championship in a row. As a result, Adrian will be the No. 1 seed in the 2017 NCHA Harris Cup tournament that starts next week.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Junior alternate captain Taylor McCloy was one of five Bulldogs who recorded at least two points, including what proved to be the game-winning goal, shorthanded, midway through the second period.

= Junior Kyle Brothers (1g, 1a), Mathew Thompson (1g, 1a), sophomore Cory Dunn (2a) and freshman Vincent Paquette (2a) joined McCloy with multi-point performances.

= Sophomore goalie Kevin Entmaa (W, 12-5-2) made 18 saves on 20 shots faced.

= Classmate Cameron Cooper potted his first goal of the season on a slap shot from the point to wrap up the game's scoring in the third period.

THE OPPOSITION
= Brandon Millin and Kale Derkson accounted for the Saints' goals.

Zane Steeves stopped 33 shots.

= Brett Radford and Josh Hansen assisted on Millin's power-play marker that knotted it 1-apiece in the first period.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= With the score knotted at 1-1 after 20 minutes, Adrian's penalty-kill unit shined in the second period. Freshman Matt McNair tallied his fifth goal of the season on a feed from McCloy with 6 minutes and 39 seconds gone, coming with the Bulldogs shorthanded.

= Then almost three minutes later, McCloy scored a "shorty" himself to put Adrian up 3-1 at 9:19 mark. CSS won an offensive face-off and the puck was played back to a defenseman on the blueline, where McCloy stole the puck and sprinted the other way for a breakaway.

= Sophomore Braden Hellems and Brothers gave Adrian a commanding 5-1 advantage to close the second period. For Hellems, it was his second goal of the season, and for Brothers, his eighth came on the power play with just 1 second left on the clock.

= Adrian outshot CSS by a 39 to 20 count, including 13-7 in the decisive second stanza.

= The Saints scored both their goals with the man-advantage.

= Adrian special teams accounted for half of the six goals--two shorthanded, one on the power play.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= All told, Adrian has captured 16 conference titles that include nine during the regular season.

= The Bulldogs will begin their two-time Harris Cup Championship defense at home on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. versus the South Division No. 2 or 3 seed. NCHA tournament official pairings and ticket information will be announced later this weekend, so stayed tuned to AdrianBulldogs.com.

= McCloy now has four shorthanded goals in his career, tying him with Joel Workman (2007-11) for fourth on the Bulldogs' all-time list.

= Dunn takes over the team lead with a personal-record 32 points, which also leads all NCAA Division III blueliners. His 25 assists match his total as a freshman last season, when he scored 31 points.

= Brothers, with eight goals and 22 assists, reaches the 30-point plateau for the third campaign in a row. The Bulldogs' active scoring leader with 111 points has notched 49-32-30.
