Slow Start Dooms Football in Homecoming Defeat to Olivet, 50-22

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich.--Senior Emmanuel Stewart rushed for 144 yards and freshman Clarence Madison had a career-best 120 yards receiving--both game highs--but it wasn't enough as Adrian couldn't overcome a slow start in a 50-22 loss Saturday to visiting Olivet on Homecoming in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association clash.

= Madison had six catches, including one for a TD.

= Jacob Jodway had five catches for 89 yards.

= Tyrain Connor averaged 47.3 yards on three punts, including two that landed inside the 20.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Olivet jumped out to a 19-0 lead after 15 minutes and 43-6 at the intermission, and never looked back.

= The Comets scored on their first eight possessions, including two Douglas Pollard field goals of 24 yards sandwiched around a Nick Thomas 11-yd TD pass from Porter. The opening quarter ended with Martin finding the end zone from three yards out with 2 minutes and 1 second remaining.

= At 11:01 on the second quarter clock, Adrian got on the scoreboard when freshman Jack Wurzer (11-34, 231 yards, 2 TDs) and Madison connected for an electrifying catch-and-run pass play that covered 69 yards.

= With Olivet leading 43-6 in the second half, Stewart scored on a 34-yard pass from Wurzer at 7:19 of the third quarter and rushed for 25 yards for another TD at 12:56 of the fourth.

=  Ellis wrapped up the scoring for both sides with a nine-yard TD run at 11:39 left.

= Olivet had a slight edge in total yards (476-444) and return yards (131-93). But led by a solid margin in first downs (24-16) and time of possession (36:09 to 23:51).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= Today's contest featured a lightning delay of 1 hour and 55 minutes at halftime. At the conclusion of the second quarter, the severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service had arrived on campus with torrential rain, wind and lightning. The game kickoff shortly after 4:05 p.m. and ended at 9:01 tonight.

= Olivet became the last NCAA Division III school to not commit a turnover this season, when it fumbled in the third quarter that stalled a scoring drive inside the 20.

= The Comets have won their four visits to Docking Stadium.

= Stewart upped his AC career rushing record to 4,452 yards, which ranks second all-time among ACTIVE student-athletes in Division III.

= Despite the loss, Adrian still holds a commanding 47-27-1 lead in the all-time series with Olivet.

=

UP NEXT
= Adrian hits the road next week when it travels to Alma to play the Scots in a MIAA matchup starting at 6 p.m.
