Austin Bottrell Propels Bulldogs Past Finlandia Lions in Home Opener, 7-0

ADRIAN, Mich.--Sophomore Austin Bottrell scored a pair of goals in the first period to set the tone for an Adrian Men's Hockey 7-0 victory over visiting Finlandia in the Bulldogs' home opener during Northern Collegiate Hockey Association action on Friday evening. 

THE BASICS

= Location: Weston Rink at Arrington Ice Arena; Adrian, Mich.

= Updated Records:  Adrian Bulldogs, 3-1-1 overall (2-1 NCHA South Division); Finlandia Lions, 0-5 overall (0-3 NCHA North Division)

TOP 'DAWGS
= Senior Dean Hewines led all scorers with three points--all assists--from his position on the blueline.

= Junior Cameron Gray stopped all 11 shots he faced for his first shutout of his collegiate career.

= Senior Vincent Paquette also netted two goals.

= Other Bulldogs enjoy a multi-point night were freshmen Zachary Heintz (1G, 1A), Alessio Luciani (2A), Terry Ryder (2A) and sophomore Sam Ruffin (2A).

= Ruffin won 15 of 23 face-offs to lead all student-athletes in both categories, followed by seniors Vinny Post (8-12), Dino Balsamo (8-13) and Luciani (10-17)

THE OPPOSITION
= Zach Erhardt led Finlandia with three shots on goal while Jack Giddings and Cory Richardson had two apiece.

= Goalie Marcus Gloss started the first 40 minutes and made 34 saves on 39 shots faced before Ben Kelsch played the last 20 making 18 of 20 stops.

= Blake Peavy won 11 of 21 face-offs.

HOW IT HAPPENED   
= Bottrell put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the first period, starting at the 7:26 mark and then 3 minutes, 5 seconds later. Hewines and Luciani assisted on both plays.

= Adrian scored three goals in the second period to widen its lead at 5-0. Paquette tallied the first of his two on the night at 8:16, then Heintz notched his first career goal at 11:51 and senior Bryce Van Horn scored his first of the season at 17:04.

= In the third period, Balsamo and Paquette wrapped up the scoring at 4:37 and 10:59, respectively. Balsamo's marker occurred on the power play.

= The home team peppered FU net with 59 shots on goal while holding the visitors to 11.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Adrian dominated the face-off circle by winning 44 of 68 draws, or 64.7 percent.

= The Bulldogs improve to 25-1 all-time against Finlandia.

UP NEXT
= These same two teams conclude their two-game NCHA weekend series at 3:05 p.m. Saturday.
