Men's Hoops Fly Past Comets for First Conference Win

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's basketball team won its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game of the season by beating Olivet 83-60 on Saturday, Feb. 9. The win snaps an 18-game losing streak for the Bulldogs. It's the largest margin of victory for Adrian since beating Great Lakes Christian by 24, 85-61, on Dec. 15, 2017 and the largest conference win since beating Kalamazoo by 37, 100-63 on Jan. 27, 2016.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Adrian 83, Olivet 60

Location: Adrian, Mich. (Merillat Sport and Fitness Center)

Records: Adrian 4-19 (1-11 MIAA), Olivet 11-12 (7-5 MIAA)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Adrian was down early, and trailed 14-6 just over six minutes into the game. The Bulldogs' offense woke up shortly later and hit three shots from behind the arc to spur a 34-9 run to close out the first half up 40-23. Those three were part of a total of seven deep balls the Black and Gold connected on in the first 20 minutes. Sophomore guard Jordan Harris and junior forward Jeremy Kalonji each had three makes from three-point land, with Harris leading the way with 16 points at the break and Kalonji with 12.

The second half was closer, but Adrian still came away with more points in the second 20 minutes of play, outscoring Olivet 43-37 in the second half. AC's efforts were helped by three players scoring double digit points in the half. Sophomore guard Sam Colbert had 13 in the second and Harris and Kalonji each scored 11. Neither team shot the ball particularly well overall, with both teams shooting under 40%. The Comets won the battle in the paint, but the Bulldogs dropped in more than twice as many threes as their opponents.

TOP DOGS

• Harris scored 27 points for the second straight game to lead the way. Two other Bulldogs joined him with over 20 points, as Kalonji scored 23 and Colbert added 22.

• Junior forward Ke'Shaun Wyatt-Morris led the team in rebounds for the third game in a row, coming down with 10 boards. It's the third time this year Wyatt-Morris has hit the double digit rebound mark.

THE OPPOSITION

Keyon Rainey and Colin Jones led Olivet's offense with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

• Trevor Manuel grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs only have two games remaining in their schedule, one at home and one away. Adrian heads up US-127 to face Alma away from home at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 before hosting Kalamazoo in the season finale on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. AC's lone senior Andrew Landini will be honored for his time spent as a Bulldog during next Saturday's contest.
