Women's Basketball Holds Trine to its Lowest Offensive Scoring Output in a MIAA Road Contest

ADRIAN, Mich.--Visiting Trine used a 9-2 run over the last 6 minutes and 36 seconds to pull away for a defensive-minded, 54-39 victory over Adrian in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action on Wednesday.

THE BASICS

Location: Merillat Sport and Fitness Center; Adrian, Mich.

Records: Trine Thunder, 13-4 overall (7-1 MIAA); Adrian Bulldogs, 7-9 overall (1-6 MIAA)

TOP 'DAWGS
= Sophomores Chelsea Palmer and Rylee Campbell each led Adrian with 11 points. Palmer added eight rebounds and Campbell, four.

= Junior Sha'Trice Graves (2 points, 2 steals) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.  

THE OPPOSITION
= Katy Steers scored a game-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals.

= Shay Herbert posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.   

= Rachel Stewart (3 points) had a game-high five steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian trailed by as many as 16 points (40-24) with 2:43 to go in the third quarter.

= But the Bulldogs eventually fought back to 45-37 down at 6:56 in the last quarter when Campbell drained a 3ball along the wing in front of her bench.

= Trine, however, took advantage of a 1-for-9 field goal shooting slump and three Adrian turnovers while scoring nine of the game's last 11 points to win by 15. Herbert scored five points in the decisive stretch for the Thunder.

= Both teams struggled finding their shot as Trine was 17-for-60 for 28.3 percent while Adrian was 14-of-53 and 26.4 percent.

= Trine made five more free throws (16-25) than Adrian attempted (7-11).

= Adrian committed 23 turnovers that Trine turned into 18 points. The Thunder had 15 turnovers to translate to three points for the Bulldogs, who were outrebounded 44 to 38.

= Trine, which never trailed in the contest, outscored Adrian in the paint, 26-14.

= The Thunder led 18-7 after the first quarter and 30-20 at the intermission.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Trine is the three-time defending MIAA champion.

= The Thunder take an 18-17 lead in the all-time series with their seventh straight win over the Bulldogs.

= Previously, Trine scored 56 points at Alma (38) on Jan. 12.

= Trine has won five consecutive games overall while Adrian sees its two-game win streak come to an end.

= Tara Bieniewicz (6 points) of Trine ranks fourth in MIAA three-point percentage at 39.6, but was held to just 1-for-6 from the arc tonight.

= Graves widens her lead atop the conference rebounding listings at 9.8 rebounds per game.

UP NEXT
= After Adrian wrapped up its three-game homestand, the Bulldogs hit the road for the next three contests starting on Saturday (7 p.m.) at MIAA foe Alma.
