Bulldogs Bitten by Walk-Off Loss to Millikin on Day 2 of Millsaps College Classic

Box Score

JACKSON, Miss.--Graduate student Brandon Baldus and junior Thomas Miller both had two hits for Adrian, but it wasn't enough to offset Brent Beals' two-run double to lift Millikin to a 4-3 walk-off baseball win on Sunday afternoon during the second day of the Millsaps College Classic.

THE BASICS
= Final Scoreline: Millikin College 4-7-1; Adrian College 3-6-1

= Junior pitcher Mo Hanley had a strong outing despite not factoring into the decision. He had 10 strikeouts in six innings, allowing two runs (1 earned), four hits and two walks.

THE OPPOSITION
= Beals finished 3-for-4, including a pair of doubles, with two runs batted in and a walk.

= Andrew Auton went 2-for-4 with a RBI.

= Jack Morgan (W, 1-0) got the win in relief, limiting Adrian on two hits, an earned and a walk while striking out three over three innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning when junior Ty Peck tripled to the right-center fence to plate classmate Nick Rauch who had walked with one out.

= But the Big Blue won it with two runs in the home half of the frame. Tre Corley led off by getting hit by a pitch and pinch-runner Daniel Mendoza stole second base. Merrik Eddington tried to sacrifice Mendoza, but reliever Jacob Hanoian quickly came off the mound and spun around to throw a strike to junior third baseman Sean O'Keefe for the out. Gabe Soria singled to right center to put runners on first and second, and a batter later Beals doubled to the gap for the tying- and game-winning runs.

= Adrian tied the score 2-2 in the sixth when senior Tristin Richardson scored on a balk with two outs.

= Big Blue captured its first lead of the afternoon in the fifth as Eddington scored from third on a passed ball with two outs.

= Auton had a RBI-single to right field to knot the score 1-1 in the third.

= The Bulldogs drew first blood on the scoreboard in the second on a Rauch RBI-groundout to shortstop to score junior Brandon Cooper who led off with a hit-by-pitch.

= Both teams had eight runners left on base.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= For the second-straight day, Adrian met a first-time opponent in Millikin. Yesterday, the Bulldogs defeated Southwestern (Texas) in the teams' first meeting.

= Hanley ranks second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with 20 strikeouts and 16.36 per 9 innings.

= With 13 strikeouts today, the Adrian pitching staff paces the MIAA with 10.02/9. The Bulldogs have 46 total--13 less than Alma but in half the innings by the Scots.
