Conference Slate Continues this Week for Men's Soccer

10/12/2021 12:00:00 PM

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian men's soccer team got its first taste of the conference action last week, matching up against two of the MIAA's perennial contenders. This week, the Bulldogs travel to take on a Kalamazoo team that has not allowed a single goal against in-league opponents, before hosting an Albion squad looking for its first conference goal.

The Hornets (7-2-2, 2-0 MIAA) are rolling off of back-to-back shutouts of Albion and Alma, extending their active unbeaten streak to seven matches.

Emilio Romo enters the week with the fifth-most goals of anyone in the MIAA. The junior's five tallies have accounted for all of his team-leading 10 points.

Fellow junior, Aidan Gillig is not far behind his teammate, having scored four goals en route to eight total points.

In-between the posts, Gavin Houtkooper has shined for Kalamazoo in the freshman campaign. The young keeper sports a conference-best 0.909 save percentage and 0.32 goals-against average.

The Hornets snapped the Bulldogs' seven-game unbeaten-streak in the all-time series last season, marking their first victory against Adrian since October 6, 2015 in Kalamazoo.

The two squads meet on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Then, on Saturday, the 'Dogs are back at Docking Stadium to host the Britons at 12 p.m.

Along with its 1-0 loss to the Hornets, Albion (2-6-1, 0-2 MIAA) is still in search of its first goal against an MIAA opponent after dropping a 3-0 decision at Hope on Saturday.

The Brits are led in scoring by Brett Swaton, Carter Peek and Braydon Stavros, who have each contributed two goals. With an additional two assists, Swaton sits atop the Albion lineup with six total points.

The Bulldogs are currently riding a six-game unbeaten-streak against the Brits, having outscored them 9-2 during that stretch.

The Adrian (2-9-2, 0-2 MIAA) offense has seen scoring from nine different athletes, including Justin Sarka with a team-high four goals.

Gary Davison, Braiden Hamilton, Aaron Kennedy and Robbie Precious are the only 'Dogs on the lineup to have scored a goal and chipped in an assist.

Live stats and video will be available for both of this week's matches.
