ADRIAN, Mich. - It had been over a week since the Adrian women's soccer team last saw the pitch in competition. That drought ended Thursday evening at Hope.
Now, the Bulldogs venture away from Adrian one last time to close out the road portion of their 2021 campaign at Calvin.
The Knights (11-2-0, 5-0-0 MIAA) have certainly lived up to the expectations placed upon them by the conference's preseason coaches' poll. As of Tuesday, October 19, Calvin ranks highest among MIAA teams in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III - Region VIII top eight, coming in at No. 3. Nationally, the Knights have been featured in the "Receiving votes" section since the first week of the season.
All told, Calvin actively ranks at the top of the MIAA in seven different statistical categories, including total goals (48) and goals per game (3.69).
A bulk of the Knights' scoring has come from the offensive duo of Sophie Mueller and Elizabeth Williams. The sophomore combo both rank inside the top five in the conference in total goals, total assists, total points and total shots.
Mueller, the MIAA's Offensive Player of the Week back on September 27, is the league's leading scorer with 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists. Williams, on the other hand, is fourth in total points, totaling 23 on nine goals and five assists. She does, however, lead the MIAA in total shots with 65.
Despite Calvin's offensive resume, the Knights still surrender an MIAA fifth-best 1.31 goals per game, just 0.01 ahead of Adrian in sixth.
Senior goalkeeper, Sarah Hoekwater, who is credited with eight wins so far this season, has made 30 saves between the posts for the Knights en route to a .698 save percentage.
Hoekwater and the Calvin defense will have their hands full against a Bulldog offense with the second-best shot percentage against conference opponents (.181).
The black and gold are led by their leading scorer in
McKenna Mahoney. The senior presently ranks in a two-way tie for the league-lead in total goals with 14, while sitting in second in total points (33), and third in total shots (58).
Mahoney had her eight-game goal-scoring streak snapped against Trine on October 12, but she found a way to rekindle her scoring touch with a pair of goals at Hope on Thursday.
Eve Davis is another prolific name for the Adrian offense. The junior has continuously been one of the top dime droppers in the MIAA, currently leading all players with 11 assists.
The locals have received additional contributions offensively from
Kaitlyn Dake, who has scored all five of her goals this season in conference-play, and
Morgan Wands, who is right behind Dake on the 'Dogs' line-up with four goals.
In goal for Adrian, set to make her 17th career start, is
Taylor Fischer. The sophomore sits at the head of conference with 79 total saves, sporting a 0.782 save percentage.
The Bulldogs (10-6-0, 5-1-0 MIAA) have won four consecutive matches against Calvin, outscoring their opposition 8-1 during that time. Prior to this current stretch, the Knights had won eight in-a-row between 2013 and 2017.
Saturday's action will undoubtably carry serious postseason implications with the end of the regular-season drawing near. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Calvin's Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids.
