ADRIAN, Mich. - On Saturday afternoon, a late push by the Adrian women's volleyball team in an attempt to force a tie-breaking fifth set fell just short, resulting in a 3-1 decision for the visiting Yeowomen of Oberlin College.
In the season's penultimate home match, the Bulldogs trailed 21-14 in the fourth set before posting a 10-2 run to move on the verge of drawing level at two sets a piece. However, three-straight points, including consecutive service aces by the visitors stopped the home side dead in their tracks.
Adrian saw significant offensive contributions from a trio of Bulldog attackers.
Destiny Johnson (.462 attack-percentage) and
Erikah Bower each finished with a game-high 14 kills, while
Mallory Dorow turned in 12 kills on 36 attempts.
The first two sets of the day treated fans to a fair share of back-and-forth action, with both sides walking away with one set win under their belts.
After the Yeowomen sealed the opening frame 25-23, the 'Dogs responded in kind in the second, utilizing a 5-0 run at one point to jump ahead 13-9. Adrian carried that momentum through the end of the set, highlighted by a pair of kills from Johnson and Dorow to ultimately tie the match at 1-1.
From there, Oberlin took advantage of a game-best .310 team attack-percentage to run away with the third frame, and eventually, the game.
Hailey Farrell led the Bulldogs with 39 assists, and
Mya Minjares recorded a team-high 17 digs for Adrian.
The black and gold (7-16, 3-3 MIAA)Â will return to the Merillat on October 27 to host Calvin for the team's annual Senior Day celebration! Match time is currently slated for 6:30 p.m.
