ADRIAN, Mich. – On Saturday afternoon in Ohio, the Adrian women's volleyball snapped a five-game losing-skid with a straight-set sweep of Wilmington. The Bulldogs are hoping the momentum from this past weekend carries over into this week's lone contest versus Kalamazoo.
The Hornets (4-13, 0-2 MIAA) opened the season 3-3, but have lost 10 of their last 11, including their last three.
The freshman trio of Ann Lawrence, Halley Johnson and Jacky LaFollette pace Kalamazoo offensively with 135, 81 and 55 kills, respectively. Together, they combine for 4.4 kills per set.
Kalamazoo has efficiently spread the wealth when it comes to dishing out assists. Sophomore, Rorie Dougherty's 163 dimes is a team-high, followed by freshmen Molly Horton with 120 assists, and Kayla Ridenour with 116.
The youth continues to be the bright spot for the Hornets, as first-year, Lizzy Rachiele sports a team-best 192 digs.
As a team, Kalamazoo sits second-to-last in the MIAA in kills per set, assists per set and digs per set.
They enter the week having won their most recent match-up with Adrian earlier this year in April. Prior to that, however, the Bulldogs had won eight of 10 in the series.
The black and gold (5-12, 1-2 MIAA) went 1-2 in three matches last week, including a conference loss at Trine.
Ayden Cribbs and
Mallory Dorow provided Adrian with much of its offense during the week, striking for 30 and 27 kills, respectively. In all, the duo lead the team with 150 and 141 total kills, combining to average 4.4 kills per set, the same mark as Kalamazoo's killing trio.
Hailey Farrell enters the week ranked fourth in the MIAA with 535 total assists, which is good for league's fifth-best average of 8.1.
On the Bulldogs' back line,
Mya Minjares continues to sit inside the top in Division III in both total digs (322) and digs per set (5.28).
All told, Adrian is actively sixth in the conference with a 0.154 hitting percentage, two spots ahead of the Hornets.
Tuesday's match is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
