MIAA Portion of 2021 Opens this week for Men's Soccer

10/4/2021 12:00:00 PM

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian men's soccer team closed out its 2021 non-conference schedule last week on the high note. Having been winless in their previous seven, the Bulldogs scored three unanswered to defeat Heidelberg on the road.

Now, the black and gold jump head first into MIAA action this week with a trip to Hope, and a home bout against No. 3 Calvin.

The Flying Dutchmen (6-2-1, 0-0 MIAA) are rolling on nearly a week's worth of rest after defeating Olivet 4-1 in a non-league contest last Wednesday.

Griffin Bruso and Nic Kubert lead Hope with three goals each, including two assists from Bruso to pace the Flying Dutchmen offense.

In goal, Danial Hesselbein boasts one of the best goals-against averages in the conference at 0.76. The freshman also sports an MIAA second-best 0.829 save percentage.

Adrian will be looking for its first win against Hope since November 1, 2017. Since then, the Dutchmen have won four straight in the series, outscoring the 'Dogs 9-1.

The two sides will meet in Holland, Michigan on Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. start time.

Then, on Saturday, Adrian will challenge its second United States Coaches Division III Top 5 opponent in Calvin.

The Knights (8-2-2, 0-0 MIAA) are four-time national championship finalists since 2009, and enter the week at number three in the latest coaches' poll.

Calvin's high-powered offense has scored a Division III-high 44 goals, led by MIAA leader, Sam Twigg's 10 scores.

In all, with his additional four assists, Twigg also paces the conference with 24 total points.

Oliver Akintade (six goals and two assists) and Mason Smith (five goals and four assists) are tied for the second-most points on the Knights' roster with 14 each, while Ethan Brown is right behind the duo with 12 points on five goals and two assists.

In the all-time series, Calvin has won nine straight against the Bulldogs with Adrian's last win coming back on October 8, 2016 at home.

The black and gold (2-7-2, 0-0 MIAA) saw the return of their scoring touch this past week at Heidelberg, ending a four-game scoring-drought.

Justin Sarka notched his team-leading third goal of the season against the Student Princes, while David Slagle and Braiden Hamilton both tallied their first.

In goal, the Bulldogs have seen the efforts of both Alex Brock and Jackson Vacca, and while Brock actively leads the MIAA with 38 saves, the later earned the victory in Adrian's most recent triumph, stopping seven shots.

Saturday's action kicks-off from Docking Stadium at 12 p.m.

Live video and stats will be available for both of this week's matches.
