ADRIAN, Mich. - For the fourth time in program history, the Adrian women's wrestling team will host the Adrian College Women's Wrestling Open at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
This year's tournament will wrap-up a packed schedule of wrestling set to go down at the Merillat Center this weekend.
The action begins on Saturday as eight schools join the Bulldogs on the mats for the 2021 Adrian Women's Duals. Along with the black and gold, Lindenwood University, Carthage College, Davenport University, Emory & Henry, Indiana Tech, Lincoln Memorial, Sacred Heart and Schreiner University are all slated to compete.
Then, on Sunday, 20 different teams, including the Bulldogs will take over Adrian's fitness facility in the largest, most exciting event so far of the young season, the Adrian College Women's Open.
In 2020, the locals captured top honors in their home event, placing first in a field of four teams with 161 total points.
Furthermore, the Bulldogs featured four first-place finishes, including
Zoe Nowicki in the 143-pound weight-class, and
Taylor Cutler in the 155-pound weight-bracket. The 'Dogs' returning duo combined to win all nine of their individual bouts.
Emily Mendez,
Angela LoRusso,
Laila Oribello and
Shawna Oesterling posted second-place finishes for the black and gold, while
Jaryn Strong,
Aspen Dodge and
Megan Vondrasek turned in third-place efforts.
All told, Adrian ended last year's Open with 19 top-five finishers.
The Bulldogs enter this weekend after a successful third-place performance at last weekend's Warrior Open in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Behind a first-place finish by Nowicki and runner-up works from LoRusso and Dodge, Adrian came away with eight total placers in the season's first competition.
Live results from both of this weekend's contests can be found through Track Wrestling.
Wrestling will begin in the blue gym of the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center at 11 am.
Admission into the event will be $10 for adults, $5 for students 18 and under, and children five and under are free. Any student with an MIAA ID will also be granted free admission.
Seating is limited in the blue gym, so it is recommended that spectators come prepared with their own seating.
