CORALVILLE, Iowa -- The Adrian College women's wrestling team was represented by two student-athletes at the NCAA Championships as
Carleigh Czerneski (117 lbs.) and
Mia Gaetjens (180 lbs.) competed against the nation's top talent at all three division levels. Czerneski and Gaetjens were also named All-Americans after their national debut. The Bulldogs finished 16 place out of 53 teams in the championship with a total of 21 points.Â
Czerneski put together an impressive run in the 117-pound bracket, finishing fifth overall. She opened the tournament with a dominant 10-0 technical fall victory over Dianna Pineda of Alfred State in 1:51. After dropping her championship bracket match to Shea Reisel of Dubuque by decision (8-4), Czerneski battled through the consolation bracket with three straight wins.
The Adrian junior earned a 12-1 technical fall over Trinity Howard of West Liberty before defeating Maddie Ripley of Western New England by a 6-0 decision. Czerneski continued her strong performance with a 7-2 decision against Gable Hemann of Wartburg to advance to the consolation semifinals. Following a setback to Karissa Turnwall of Emmanuel by technical fall, Czerneski bounced back in the fifth-place match, securing a 7-4 decision over Jenna Anderson of Presbyterian to earn a top-five national finish.
Competing at 180 pounds, Gaetjens began her tournament run with a strong showing, pinning Maryam Ndiaye of Augustana (Ill.) in 5:37 during the opening round. She advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Isabella Renfro of Fort Hays State by fall.
Gaetjens responded with another victory in the consolation bracket, pinning Madeline Hodges of Sacred Heart in 1:09 to stay alive in the tournament. Her run concluded after a technical fall loss to Isabella Phillips of Gannon in the consolation rounds and a fall to Paige Maher of Simon Fraser in the seventh-place match.
The Bulldogs close out their highly competitive season on national stage with a good showing.Â
