ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College men's rugby team travels to Knoxville, Tennessee this weekend to compete in the Division 2 NCR National Tournament. The Bulldogs come into the tournament holding the No. 2 ranking in the country behind Norwich.
The Bulldogs come into the tournament with a 5-0 record after wins against University of Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Grand Valley State University, and Central Michigan University. Adrian started the season slow with a 12-10 win over University of Michigan, but came out two weeks later strong than ever. After the team's first match, the Bulldogs have gone on to defeat their opponents by an average of 38 points a game.
After receiving forfeits from Oakland University, Ferris State University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Calvin University, Adrian was forced to pick up two exhibition games to stay in shape for the National Tournament. The Bulldogs went on to defeat the Fort Wayne Rugby Club 60-10 followed by an 82-24 victory over Michigan Select Side.
On the year,
Lolohea Fonua and
Nicholas Andiarena lead the team with six tries each.
Michael Pakofe and
Petelo Vatuvei follow with five tries, and four come from
Macgregor Adams,
Max Miller, and
Seti Latu.
On the conversion end of things,
Sam Williams has completed 19 of the team's 54 attempts, and Adams has completed 16 of the team's 54 attempts.
The Bulldogs will open the weekend in the Sweet 16 against No. 13 ranked UNC-Charlotte. At the same time No. 4 UMass-Lowell will take on No. 3 Illinois State in the other side of the regional bracket to determine who advances to the Elite Eight. Adrian will play in the Sweet 16 round on Friday at 11:00 AM at Tennessee Rugby Park. If the Bulldogs take the victory, they will advance to the Elite Eight on Sunday, November 21 at 12:00 PM while the loser will play Saturday at 11:00 AM in a consolation match.
