WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The Adrian College men's basketball team traveled to Otterbein University in Ohio to take on the Cardinals in a nonconference game. Adrian led by as many as 14 during the game, but the Cardinals battled back to hit a shot at the buzzer and win 71-70.
The Bulldogs began the game with a 5-0 lead with the help of a
Robert Warrick layup and a
Connor Pelham three-pointer. Freshman
Andrew Larson went on to hit back-to-back shots to lead 11-3. The Cardinals made it a one possession game at 11-9, but Pelham knocked down a three to extend the lead to five. The Bulldogs kept the momentum and made it a 26-15 game with layups by Warrick, Larson,
De'Ovion Price, and
Kendall Chrismon. Pelham stayed hot scoring Adrian's final six points in the first half to head into the break with a 38-27 lead.
Warrick knocked down the first two points of the second half to give Adrian its largest lead of the night at 13. After Otterbein scored in the second half, the Bulldogs scored five straight points with Warrick, Chrismon, and
P'hariz Watkins contributing. The Cardinals went on a run later in the half bringing it to a 6-point Bulldog lead. Larson and Price put the lead back to ten, but Otterbein sparked a run a put the score at 65-62 in favor of the Bulldogs with three minutes to play.
Jalen Paul made a layup after an Adrian stop to bring the lead back to five, but the Cardinals responded with a layup to bring the lead back to three.
With just over a minute to play, Watkins drove in for a layup that was quickly answered with a two-point basket from Otterbein. After a missed basket by Adrian, Otterbein called a timeout with 17 seconds left to play with Adrian leading 69-66. Out of the timeout, the Cardinals made a layup to make it a one-point game. After Adrian went 1-of-2 from the line with 11 seconds to go in the game, Otterbein found an open man from beyond the arch who hit a shot at the buzzer to win 71-70.Â
Pelham finished the day with a team-high 19 points with seven rebounds, two steals, and a block. Larson and Warrick each contributed 12 points while Larson added five boards and shot 6-for-6 from the field.
The Bulldogs will return to action at home on Saturday, December 4 at 1:00 PM when they take on Case Western Reserve in a nonconference battle at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
