ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College football team (2-2) opens MIAA conference play this weekend on the road at Trine University. The Bulldogs began the season 0-2, but have bounced back with a win at home over Greenville University and a win on the road at Finlandia University. The Bulldogs defeated Greenville, 41-28, and Finlandia, 56-6.
The offense is coming off an explosive 56-point performance led by 26 points in the second quarter alone. Quarterback
Jack Wurzer went 7-for-15 with 138 passing yards and a touchdown. Wurzer also recorded 12 yards rushing with a touchdown. Back-up QB
Brandon Nelson made his first appearance of the season and completed his first pass of the year for a 45-yard touchdown, and later recorded a touchdown rush.
The team is led by the running game featuring
Steven Moses,
Malik Ray, and
Jimmie Clark. Clark recorded 105 yards on 14 rushes with three touchdowns over the weekend. Moses followed up his MIAA Player of the Week award with 85 rushing yards and a touchdown, and
Malik Ray added 37 yards rushing out of the backfield. The Bulldogs also recorded 246 yards receiving that was spaced out among six receivers.
Tyler Poirier led the way with 66 yards and touchdown follwed by 63 yards from
Scott Schrader.
Gage Palus picked up 49 yards, and
Kenny Kujawa finished with 29 yards and a touchdown.
Moses leads the team in rushing with 419 yards followed by ray with 185, and Clark with 135. The trio of runnings backs combine for seven touchdowns rushing on the season, and Wurzer adds three more himself. After Saturday's game, Wurzer now has 588 yards passing on the season with five touchdowns in 43 completions.
Preston Smith leads the Adrian wide receiver core with 186 yards receiving followed by 133 from Kujawa with two touchdowns.
Saturday's defensive performance was just as impressive as the offense. The Bulldogs allowed only 82 yards of total offense on the day with nine pass break-ups and 11 tackles for loss.
Jack MacArthur record eight tackles on the day followed by five each from
Sam Madrid,
Trevon Daniel, and
Kyle Minder. Deandre Jennings added a 54-yard interception return, and Kareem Ownes forced a fumble.
Minder leads the defense with 31 total tackles with 15 solo tackles and four tackles for loss.
Brandon Kwiatkowski has 30 total tackles on the year followed by 21 from Jennings, Madred, and
Donovan McCary.
The Bulldogs will look to take down the MIAA preseason favorite Trine University on Saturday, October 2 at 1PM in Angola, Ind. Due to the Trine University Homecoming, visiting fans are asked to park in the parking lot located on W Gale Street next to The Depot Grill and the train tracks. Parking is $5.
