Women's Rugby Picks up Program's First Win

9/5/2021 2:43:00 PM

ADRIAN, Mich. - At Docking Stadium, an enthusiastic crown was treated to the debut of the Adrian College women's rugby team. In a trio of matches against the University of Michigan, the Bulldogs won once, tied once, and lost once.

"We're just incredibly proud of the girls and how they worked," said head coach John Gulden. "They came out really aggressive which I think is one of the things you don't normally see with a new team."

Anais Melendrez opened the scoring in the first match, grounding the ball just inside the in-goal area to get the locals on the board for the very first time.

The Wolverines responded quickly, however, tallying a pair of tries before the end of the first half.

In the second half, Melendrez once again met the turf of the in-goal area to bring the match to its 10-10 final.

After getting a solid feel for one another, the two sides retook the field for a second match and any rust that may have been on the first affair was immediately shaken off.

Claire Ames would connect on a try and conversion in the first half, but the visitors, again found their footing soon after to take the lead. Then, in the closing moments of regulation, Shyann Ronning picked up the ball around midfield, and after finding a hole, broke loose for a go-ahead try, giving Adrian its first win in program history, 12-10.

The Wolverines controlled a majority of the possession in the third match, posting a 10-0 lead deep into the second half. A break-out run and try by Daniyah Green would put the black and gold on the board in the final seconds, but by then Michigan had all but secured the win.

The Bulldogs (1-1-1) are set to resume their schedule on September 11 when they travel to Grand Rapids to challenge Davenport.
