GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - On Saturday afternoon, despite a history-making performance by
Andrew Larson, the Adrian men's basketball team could not overcome a slow start to the second half, ultimately falling to Calvin 81-61.
With an old-fashion three-point play midway through the second frame, Larson became the first player in program history to record at least 10 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in a single game.
It was the all-around effort of the Knights, however, that proved to be the difference, as they held the visitors without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the final half, while at the same time piecing together a 15-0 run.
The action from Van Noord Arena picked up early, with both sides trading scoring streaks over the opening moments of the game.
Calvin made the first move, racing ahead 15-7 before the Bulldogs started a counter attack.
A pair of free throws by
Kendall Chrismon sparked a 12-0 Adrian run, capitalized by a physical Connor Pellham layup, and a pull-up jump shot by Chrismon.
From there, things swinged quickly back in favor of the home side, and they carried their new found momentum all the way into the locker room, and eventually, to the final horn.
Pellham finished the contest with a team-high 13 points, followed by Larson's effort, which closed at 12 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals.
Chrismon chipped in 11 points off the bench, also adding seven boards.
Next up for the black and gold is a home conference match-up on January 19 with Hope College, which is set to cap-off a doubleheader with the women, who will open the evening against Alma College at 6 p.m.
