Women's Basketball Opens 2022 with Conference Road Trip

ADRIAN, Mich. - This week, the Adrian women's basketball team kicks its conference schedule into high gear.

The Bulldogs (3-8, 0-3 MIAA) are returning to the hardwood following the holiday break, and will begin the new year against another in-league foe in search of its first conference win, in Olivet.

The Comets (2-10, 0-4 MIAA) have been out of action since a December 18th loss to Calvin. In what was the team's third consecutive loss, the offense managed 50-plus points for only the fifth time this season.

Despite a conference-low 49.3 points per game, Olivet still sports one of the league's top scorers in Zoee Zatarga. The sophomore's 11.8 points per outing ranks fifth among the MIAA's leaders, and she has corralled a majority of that number from inside the paint, shooting 45.9 percent from the field with only two attempts from beyond the three-point line.

Along with her team-high efficiency in scoring, Zatarga also leads the Comets with 80 total rebounds while ranking second among the team's active players with 15 assists and 14 steals.

Rachel Swartz, who is averaging 6.9 points an appearance, paces Olivet with 29 blocks.

Wednesday's match-up between the Bulldogs and the Comets will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. at Olivet's Cutler Event Center. Adrian enters having won four of the last meetings between the two schools, including the last three by an average of 18.6 points.

Then, on Saturday, the black and gold hit the road again to face off against Kalamazoo.

The Hornets' (3-8, 1-2 MIAA) lone win in conference-play this season came back on December 1 versus Olivet. Since then, they have dropped five of six.

Laila Vincent, Kaytlyn Tidey and Kaelyn Arlington have been Kalamazoo's go-to trio.

Vincent, a freshman, sits atop the Hornets' line-up in points per game (11.9), rebounds per game (9.1), steals per game (1.3) and blocks per game (1.6). She is one of three players in the MIAA to actively rank inside the top five in scoring, rebounds and blocks, joining Calvin's Gabby Timmer.

Arlington, a sophomore, is posting 8.8 points an outing while also ranking just behind Vincent with the league's third-highest rebounding average, which is also 8.8.

Lastly, Tidey, a senior, is contributing a Hornets'-best 2.1 assists per game to go adjacent with her 11.5 scoring average.

This weekend's contest will be the first in the all-time series in Kalamazoo in almost two years. The last time Adrian ventured to the Anderson Athletic Center, the home side came away with a 63-62 victory. Aside from that result, the 'Dogs have won five of the last six against the Hornets.

The locals enter this week with the MIAA's sixth-highest scoring average at 59.3 points per game. Just before the holiday break, Adrian set a new season-best with an 85-point performance at Earlham. However, that effort was countered the following night with a season-low 45 points against Bluffton.

Senior, Chelsea Palmer continues to pace the Bulldogs in both scoring (12.8) and on the glass (6.8). Her 0.476 field goal percentage is tenth-best in the conference, while her 5.4 field goals per contest ranks third.

Makayla Clement, a freshman, remains at the top of the Adrian leaderboard with 15 total steals and eight total blocks, despite missing the most recent game. She is also second on the team with a 7.6 scoring mark, just a fraction ahead of Rylee Campbell's 7.5 points per game.

Both of this week's games will include live stats and live video.

Fans are encouraged to be aware of Olivet's and Kalamazoo's spectator policy prior to traveling.
