Women’s Soccer Falls To Albion 4-3 On Penalty Shootout Saturday Afternoon

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's soccer team lost 4-3 on penalties against Albion Saturday afternoon in the MIAA Tournament First Round.

How It Happened

During the first half of play, seniors Mckenna Mahoney and Eve Davis led the Bulldogs squad combining for two shots on goal. On the defensive end, junior goalkeeper Taylor Fischer faced two shots on goal, saving both strikes. The first half concluded in a 0-0 deadlock at Kapnick Field.

After intermission, neither side gained a sustainable advantage over one another.

"We knew this would be an evenly played match, and we absorbed most of Albion's attacking pressure well, especially in the second half once we started connecting in possession after winning the ball. We produced most of the dangerous chances of the day, but ultimately, we just weren't able to finish those opportunities. Anytime a game goes to penalties, it's a tough way to settle a tight match, but ultimately a winner has to be decided somehow," said head coach Ali Alamdari.

Albion was able to rattle off five shots on the Bulldogs in the second half. For the Bulldogs, freshman Teagan Bergeron had one shot and Josie Huber added on two of her own. In the first and second overtime periods, the Bulldogs had chances to convert, however, the score remained 0-0 and the match headed to penalties.

The Shootout

Mckenna Mahoney opened the penalty shoot with a goal, while Albion responded with a goal of their own. Senior Kaitlyn Dake was next up for the Bulldogs and put Adrian up 2-1. Later into the shootout, Albion would take the lead 3-2 on penalties. Teagan Bergeron was up next to shoot for the Bulldogs. After the whistle blew, Beergeron lined up her shot and placed the ball into the back of the net, bringing the Bulldogs to an even 3-3 tie with Albion. However, during Albion's next penalty shot, they were able to secure the winning goal of the game.

After the match Coach Alamdari praised his senior class, "This class of seniors has been an incredible group to work with. They've each faced their own challenges, and their sacrifices have made this program stronger as a result. We had a great deal of work to do this season in terms of improving our style and quality of play, as well as chemistry and culture off the field, and they have set us up for success in the future." said Alamdari.
