Women's Hockey to Host Finlandia in Slaats Cup Opener

2/24/2022 4:00:00 PM

ADRIAN, Mich. - On Friday evening, the 2022 Kronschnabel Trophy recipients will officially begin their quest for a seventh-straight Slaats Cup!

Entering the postseason in the midst of an eight-game win-streak, the (RV) Adrian women's NCAA hockey team will host Finlandia University in this weekend's quarterfinal series.

The Lions (3-19-1, 3-13-0 NCHA) are making their first playoff appearance since 2010, and only second in program history. In the regular-season match-ups between the two schools, the Bulldogs routed Finlandia 7-1 in game one before posting a narrow 3-2 victory in the second game.

Sophomore Aleah Giddings has been an effective scorer for the Lions in just 10 games played, actively pacing the team with nine points on six goals and three assists. Against Adrian, she tallied one goal and one assist on two shots.

Senior India Charles, who also managed a goal and an assist versus the Bulldogs, is tied with Giddings for the team-lead in points, despite having not scored a goal since her one against the black and gold on January 21.

In goal, Kayla Savoie-Penton (3-11-0) is on track for one of the best seasons by a Finlandia goaltender in program history. The junior currently boasts a 0.918 save percentage and 2.83 goals-against average, both of which are in line for single-season school records.

She will have her hands full, however, with Adrian's high-powered offense, which with 95 total goals, ranks eighth in Division III.

Karmen Anderson leads the 'Dogs scoring with 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists, and has contributed a point in each of her last three appearances. She is currently the only skater with double-digit marks in both goals and assists, though Une Bjelland (11 goals and nine assists), Jessica VonRuden (10 goals and nine assists) and Brooke Schembri (eight goals and 10 assists) are not far behind.

Kaleigh Cadorette is another provider for the Adrian attack that has been on a surge as of recent. In the last four games of the regular-season, the junior tallied two goals and five assists, including two powerplay goals and two game-winners.

Between the pipes, Denisa Jandova actively leads the NCHA with a 0.89 goals-against average, a 0.947 save percentage, and a 0.889 win percentage. Her teammate Sophie Goldberg ranks second in each of those categories (1.05 GGA, 0.943 SV%, 0.792 W%).

The Bulldog defense has been near-unbreakable since late-January, posting six shutouts in 12 games, and never allowing more than two goals in a single game.

This weekend's action begins on Friday evening at 7 p.m., then continues on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. A 20 minute "mini-game" will follow game two, if necessary.

Should Adrian emerge victorious from this series, the 'Dogs would host next weekend's semifinal and final round at Arrington Ice Arena.

Live stats and video will be available for both games.
