Game Recap: Women's NCAA Ice Hockey | | Joel Snyder

Daversa Sets Program Record as Women's Hockey Sweeps Lake Forest

ADRIAN, Mich. - When the weekend began, the Adrian women's hockey sat three points out of first-place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings. Five days later, the Bulldogs now hold a one-point lead for the conference's top seed.

On Tuesday afternoon, the black and gold completed a two-day, two-game sweep of Lake Forest College with a 2-0 shutout. Brooke Schembri recorded her second multi-goal effort of the season, tallying both of Adrian's goals.

Another fifth-year senior, Sydney Daversa, also made headlines for the locals at the Arrington Ice Arena, becoming the program's all-time leader in games played with her 120th-career appearance.

"It actually took me by surprise," explained Daversa. "I didn't realize this milestone was coming up, but it's awesome that I have been able to be apart of the program for so long, and its cool that we got the sweep with Lake Forest."

Right off the opening puck-drop, fans were treated to much of the same excitement and back-and-forth action that Monday's affair had produced.

Then, after 13 minutes of scoreless action, Adrian broke through.

With a Forester in the penalty box, the Bulldogs set up shop in their attacking-zone. Sophomore Kathryn Truban began with the puck at the blue line, lining a pass towards the far boards to fellow sophomore Jocelin Hudanish. The Florida native wasted no time rifling a pass to Schembri who was waiting at the back door to send the puck into the back of the net.

After a scoreless middle frame, the 'Dogs added a much-needed insurance mark just over six minutes into the third when a high-rising shot from Jessica Anderson was redirected en route by Schembri.

From that point on, the Adrian defense was clutch, fighting off a 5-on-3 chance for Lake Forest shortly after the game's second goal, and keeping them off the scoresheet in the final moments with their goalie pulled.

Denisa Jandova made her second-straight start in goal for the Bulldogs, stopping 15 shots to claim her 25th-career clean sheet.

Having ended their five-day, five-game straight with four consecutive wins, the women now turn their attention to a weekend series with Aurora.

"The first game (at Concordia-Wisconsin) as tough for us," noted Daversa. "We realized we needed to take it game-by-game, period-by-period, and not worry about the four ahead of us. After that we got our heads on straight and we were ready to rock."

Game one against the Spartans is slated for Saturday evening at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday-afternoon bout at 2 p.m. Both contests are set to take place at Arrington Ice Arena.
