GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - At the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center, the Adrian men's volleyball team closed the non-conference portion of its 2022 campaign against Aquinas College. With an overall attack percentage rivaling 0.400, the Saints rattled off three-straight set victories to defeat the Bulldogs, 3-0.
Offensively,
Peyton Doelling turned in one of his best hitting performances of the season, posting seven kills, his most in a match this season since January 15, behind a 0.500 attacking mark.
Fellow senior
Tedrick Gula also chipped in seven successful attacks, followed by brother Branden and
Chase Heuer with five kills each.
The 'Dogs (5-17, 2-2 MCVL) got off to a solid start with 7-3 run in the first set, but a five-point stretch by the home side quickly pushed them to the lead, 8-7. Adrian remained in contention and knotted things up at 9-9, courtesy of a kill by
Andrew Gawrisch. The Saints, nevertheless, swung the momentum back in their favor and ran away with the opening frame, 25-16.
Despite another strong lead in the early stages of the middle set, the black and gold stumbled keeping Saints at bay. With the set even at 15-15, Aquinas closed on a 10-5 run to dig Adrian into a two-set hole that it, ultimately, could not recover from.
On the evening, the Bulldogs were narrowly edged by the Saints in service aces, 5-4; total blocks 6-5; and digs, 27-24.
Jacob Rembulat led the local's backline with five digs, while
Brandon Ravelo fed a team-high 22 assists.
Next on the docket for Adrian are the final conference matches of the regular-season, beginning on Friday evening in Cincinnati, Ohio against Mount St. Joseph University.
