No. 19 Baseball Takes Home Opener Against Crosstown Rival Siena Heights

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College baseball team was back at Nicolay Field on Wednesday for the 2022 home opener where the No. 19 Bulldogs hosted the Siena Heights University Saints from across town. The Bulldogs brought their offense today put up 15 runs to come away with a 15-8 victory. Adrian recorded a pair of homers on the day thanks to AJ Miranda and Kevin Cardentey.

Daniel Gutierrez struggled on the mound to start the game as Siena Heights jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Adrian responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI double from Thomas Miller and a sacrifice fly from Dylan Johnson. The Bulldogs took the lead in the second on a 2-RBI single to lead 4-3.

The Saints took the lead back in the third on a 2-RBI single to lead 5-4, but AJ Miranda went yard to tie things up a 5-5 in the bottom of the third. Miranda's home run marked the fourth of the season and the ninth of his career to move tied for 17th all-time in program history with Brian Bilius for 2008-11 and Kirk Nichols from 2001-04.

The Bulldogs went off for five runs in the fourth inning sparked by a RBI double from Don Goodes to lead 6-5. Ty Peck scored on a wild pitch later in the inning followed by a sac fly from Miranda. Kevin Cardentey hit a ball that bounced off the top of the wall for a double to drive home Miller. Johnson wrapped up the scoring in the fifth for Adrian with a triple to right center field to bring home another run and lead 10-5. After his double in the fifth, Cardentey found a little extra power in the sixth hitting a solo homer to extend the lead.

Siena Heights added a pair of runs in the eighth that were quickly answered with a three run inning from Adrian. Gus Weaks recorded his first career hit on a pinch-hit 2-RBI triple followed by a single from Ryan Davis to lead 15-7. The Saints hit a solo homer in the ninth, but couldn't put together a rally giving Adrian the 15-8 victory.

Andrew Giorno moved to 3-0 on the year pitching in relief as he went two innings allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout.

Adrian returns to action this weekend as they host Heidelberg University on Saturday, March 19 at Nicolay Field starting at 2:00 PM.
