Thomas Miller's Big Day Proves too Much for Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. -- The No. 4 Adrian College baseball team returned to action on Wednesday with its annual stop at Piedmont. The Bulldogs came away with an 8-run victory to take down the Lions 16-8. Thomas Miller had a big day at the plate with five hits to go with five RBIs and three runs scored.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double from Miller to take an early 1-0 lead. After Miller advanced to third, Kevin Cardentey hit a sac fly to left to make it 2-0. Don Goodes tripled in the second to drive in a pair which was quickly followed by a sac fly from Ty Peck to take a 5-0 lead in the second.

Piedmont was able to score three in the bottom half of the inning to make it 5-3 with all runs being scored unearned. 

Goodes reached base again in his next plate appearance and quickly scored after a triple from Peck. Miller picked up another hit in the fourth to bring Peck home and give Adrian a 7-3 lead. The Lions got into some trouble in the eighth as they loaded the bases. Miller walked to score another run, followed by a hit by pitch from A.J. Miranda to score again an lead 9-3.

The Lions showed some life in the bottom half of the fifth, but only managed to score ones to make it 9-4. 

Andrew Atherton drove in a run for the Bulldogs in the sixth followed by a sac fly from Goodes to extend the lead. In the seventh, Aaron Valentine doubled in a run to make it 12-4 in favor of Adrian before Easton Rogers singled to give the Bulldogs a 10-run lead. Miller wasn't done with his day and he managed to hit the team's first home run of the year with a 2-run bomb to go up 16-4. 

Piedmont rallied late scratching four across in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Adrian came away with the 16-8 victory.

Miller finished 5-for-5 on the day with a double and home run to go with five RBIs and three runs scored. Every hitter in the starting lineup reached base for Adrian.

Michael Swanson got the start for Adrian going four innings allowed three unearned runs with a pair of strikeouts. Andrew Giorno picked up the win with two innings in relief allowing one run on three hits.

The Bulldogs will take another day off as they travel to Mount Berry, Georgia to begin a three-day tournament starting at 3:00 PM on Friday, March 4 where they take on Berry College who is receiving votes in the latest top-25 poll.
