ADRIAN, Mich. - The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League postseason is scheduled to begin in two weeks, and only four of the conference's nine programs will secure a bid to compete for the tournament title.
Coming into this weekend's road contest at Olivet College, the Adrian men's volleyball team sits only a half-game back of Mount St. Joseph for the fourth-seed. The Comets, on the other hand, have not faired well against league opponents this season, and are 0-4 in MCVL-play. That record does not include an early-season meeting with the Bulldogs, in which the black and gold posted a three-set sweep.
Despite the result against Adrian back in January, Olivet still garnered a breakout effort by its leading-attacker in Deontay Thomas. The sophomore, who is up to 145 kills through 14 matches this season, set a Comets single-match, three-set record with 18 kills in the loss.
Thomas is assisted by fellow second-year Everett Haynes, who actively ranks seventh in the league with 338 total dimes.
Defensively, junior Dakota Galeazzi leads the Comets' back line with 133 digs, while Thayne Bilicki's 31 total blocks stands tied for 13th in the conference.
The quartet led Olivet in each respective category when it traveled to Adrian several months ago, but it was not enough to defeat a Bulldog squad that hit 27.4 percent on the attack and turned in a three-set season-high 38 kills.
Sophomores
Chase Heuer and
Andrew Gawrisch were behind most of the 'Dogs offense back then, combining for 21 kills. Still, the duo continues to pace the team in that regard, including a league-best 323 total kills from Heuer.
Senior
Brandon Ravelo is another Bulldog leading the pack on the stat charts, currently sitting atop the MCVL with 825 assists and 48 service aces, while also ranking tied for eighth with 136 digs.
The Gula combo of Tedrick and Branden are the next closest offensive contributors to Heuer and Gawrisch on the Adrian line-up. The latter of the two has compiled 31.0 total blocks on the year, which is second on the team to
Gavin Yonker's 34.0, while Tedrick's 14 service aces and 167 kills each rank third.
Live video for Friday's match-up will be available through Olivet College's Stretch Internet, and live stats can be viewed through olivetcomets.com or adrianbulldogs.com.
