PHILIPPI, W. Va. - At Alderson Broaddus University, a pregame snowfall did not stop the Adrian women's rugby team from continuing the spring portion of its 2021-22 campaign. Despite starting the day with nearly an inch of snow on the field, the 'Dogs still found a way to work in four matches against Davenport University.
"The girls played very physical defense, which is something we focused on this week," said head coach
John Gulden. "They were resilient all day even with snow on the ground early."
In the first match,
Gabby Jex notched all three of the Bulldogs' tries en route to a 15-5 Adrian win. The sophomore scored back-to-back in the first half before the Panthers trimmed into the lead to make it 10-5. Then, in the second half, after some back-and-forth action, Jex put the contest on ice from a ruck, securing a ten-point victory.
Davenport flipped the script on the 'Dogs in the second match, building a 15-0 lead into the latter stages of the match.
Shyann Ronning did get Adrian on the board late, busting through a couple of tackles to find the endline, but it was too little too late.
The black and gold got back in the win column in the third match, again behind the offense of Ronning and Jex, who combined to score all three of the Bulldogs' tries for another 15-5 result.
Unfortunately, the 'Dogs were shutout in the day's final match, brining their final record on the day to 2-2.
Next on the docket for Adrian is a trip to Allendale, Michigan on April 2. There the Bulldogs will compete in the Great Lakes 7's Tournament, hosted by Grand Valley State University.
