Tennis Dives into Conference Play this Week

3/28/2022 2:08:00 PM

ADRIAN, Mich. - This week, the 2022 conference schedule swings into high gear for the Adrian men's and women's tennis team, as they welcome Albion College to the Craft Tennis Complex before traveling to Trine University.

The Bulldog men (6-5, 1-0 MIAA), who are coming off of a perfect weekend against Lourdes University and Olivet College, will open the upcoming schedule on Tuesday against the Brits, followed by the women taking the courts on Wednesday. Then, on Saturday, both teams travel south to Angola, Indiana to meet the Thunder.

The Albion men (6-4, 0-1 MIAA) feature a trio of athletes with at least five wins on the season in singles competition, including Drake Malcolm, who boasts a team-best 0.600-win percentage at 6-4. In doubles, Malcolm and his teammate Brett Guzell, as well as Michael Polizzi and Cecil Burkhart, are 7-2.

The Briton women (1-8, 0-1 MIAA) are in the midst of six-match skid dating back to March 2, and have also lost six-straight meetings against Adrian. Their male counterparts are in the same boat when it comes to matching up against the black and gold, having also dropped each of their last six contests against the 'Dogs.

Trine is led by a solid women's program that sports an overall record of 7-4. The did, however, most recently drop its conference-opener to Kalamazoo, 7-2.

Ashley Spirrison recorded both of the Thunder's points against the Hornets, picking up a straight-set win in her singles' bout after collecting a win with Ellie Cole in doubles.

The Trine men (5-5) have lost five of their last eight since starting the season 2-0. On March 20, they lost a 6-3 decision to Wabash, in which Caleb Morris copied Spirrison's effort with tallies in both singles and doubles.

As for the Adrian men, Ryan Cuddy (5-6), Whitman Hopper (4-3), Zachary Perry (3-6) have each won back-to-back duals in singles competition, while the doubles combo of Cuddy and Jackson Wilcox remain unblemished at 5-0.

The Bulldog women (5-6), on the other hand, have not seen the court since March 3, and are hoping to work around an impending rain shower to begin their conference-slate against Albion.

Liv Depies (8-3) and Jules Johnson (8-1) pace the team with eight wins apiece in singles action, and Elizabeth Himebauch (4-3) is actively riding a three-match win-streak after beginning the season 1-3.

In doubles, Johnson and Himebauch (7-3) continue to be the 'Dogs strongest foot after finishing 3-1 over Spring Break. The duo of Maddison Wagner and Depies also exhibited some success down south, winning both of their outings as a pair.

Both of the weekday match-ups with Albion College are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., while on Saturday, the men will open at 11 a.m., followed by the women at 2 p.m.
