ADRIAN, Mich. - At Arrington Ice Arena, the Adrian women's hockey team's run in the Slaats Cup Playoffs came to an emotional end on Friday evening. The visiting Spartans of Aurora University did everything right defensively, rattling the Bulldogs en route to a 3-0 decision.
The victors' all-conference netminder proved to be the game's primary catalyst, as Chiara Pfosi stopped all 30 shots faced, while Adrian's all-league crease-keeper,
Sophie Goldberg closed the night with 17 saves.
Aurora distributed its goals over each of the three periods, including an empty-netter in the final moments. The 'Dogs, on the other hand, muscled nine, or more shots in each frame, but could not solve Pfosi and the rest of the Spartan defense.
Adrian's most notable opportunity came on their only powerplay opportunity of the middle period, in which they mustered two blue line chances from
Kathryn Truban and
Maya Roy.
Five different locals finished with three shots on goal, including
Jessica VonRuden,
Jocelin Hudanish,
Brooke Schembri,
Aileena Dopheide and Truban.
With the early exit out of the conference tournament, the Bulldogs now await the release of the NCAA's Division III tournament bracket, which is set to be announced on the evening of Sunday, March 6.
Friday's game was also, in all likelihood the final-career home game for
Abbie Grias,
Sydney Daversa,
Denisa Jandova and Schembri. The quartet have been instrumental in the program's success over the last five years, and their lasting impacts will always be remembered.
