Baseball Opens Weekend Series with Win in MIAA Opener

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College baseball team got back on the winning track on Friday afternoon as they defeated Calvin University in a 10-6 victory at Nicolay Field. Due to snow in Grand Rapids, the game was moved to Adrian with Calvin serving as the home team. The Bulldogs picked up the win in the MIAA opening game behind a solid pitching performance from Maxwell Denny.

Adrian didn't wait to get going on offense scoring two runs in the first inning. After a base hit from Thomas Miller, AJ Miranda tripled to right field to drive in the first run of the game. Easton Rogers followed it up with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Miranda and lead 2-0 after the first inning. The Bulldogs scratched a pair in the second on a RBI double from Don Goodes and an infield single from Miller to lead 4-0. 

Windy day at Nicolay Field push a fly ball to left over the fence for Calvin with the bases loaded to tie the game 4-4.

Owen Brown reached on an error in the third inning to score a pair of unearned runs with the bases loaded to lead 6-4. Aaron Valentine flew out to right field to score Miranda in the fourth to keep the scoring threat and lead 7-4. In the sixth inning, Miranda hit his second triple of the game to drive in another run followed by another sac fly from Valentine to go up 9-4.

Calvin struck again in the seventh to make it a 9-5 game, but the Bulldogs responded on an RBI single from Miranda to go up 10-5 in the eighth. Calvin double in a late run in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enought as Jacob Hanoian came in to record the save for Adrian. 

Denny moved to 2-1 on the season after throwing six inning allowing four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Miranda finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored.

The Bulldogs return to action at home on Saturday, April 2 as they host Calvin in a doubleheader at Nicolay Field slatted to begin at 12:00 PM.
