Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader After Opening with a One Hit Shutout from Swanson

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College baseball team completed its series with Calvin University on Saturday splitting an afternoon doubleheader with the Knights. After taking game one of the series on Friday afternoon, the Bulldogs opened the day with a seven inning 13-0 victory. The Bulldogs scored nine runs in the third inning to lead their way to victory. Calvin bounced back in the second game of the day to avoid the sweep and defeated Adrian 6-3. 

In game one of the day, the Bulldogs started the scoring in the third opened by a sacrifice fly from Gus Weaks to lead 1-0 after scoring Andrew Atherton. Don Goodes later singled to center field to drive in Ryan Davis followed by a 2-RBI single from Easton Rogers. Dylan Johnson later contributed in the effort with a RBI to lead 4-0. Ryan Davis hit a double on a short pop up that was taken by the win to score two more. Later in the inning, two more came to the plate off an error to lead 9-0.

Adrian scored more in the fifth inning on a on a sac fly from Davis and a single from Goodes to lead 11-0. The Bulldogs struck once more in the sixth on another double from Davis to round out the 13-0 victory. 

Davis finished game one 3-for-3 with four RBIs while Goodes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Michael Swanson got the start for Adrian where he improved to 2-0 on the season after throwing seven strong innings allowing just one hit on six strikeouts to pick up a complete game shutout.

Game two of the day went all nine innings with the Knights bouncing back to take home the win. The Bulldogs scored in the first inning as Easton Rogers reached on an error to score Kevin Cardentey followed by a double steal in which AJ Miranda took home to lead 2-0. Calvin put up three in the second inning to take the lead, but Goodes picked up an RBI on a ground out to to tie the game 3-3. Calvin scored again in the third inning followed by a pair on a double in the fourth to lead 6-3. The scoring went silent the rest of the way as Calvin avoided the sweep with the win.

Garrett Lussier went three innings on the mound for Adrian during his start to pick up the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits.

The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround as they are back at home on Sunday, April 3 where they host the College of Wooster in a nonconference match up. First pitch for Sunday's game is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
