ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College baseball team jump back on the winning track on Saturday with a pair of victories over Albion College. The Bulldogs came out ready to hit and the pitching staff did its job saucing up the Albion hitters. The MIAA incorporated a 10-run mercy rule after seven innings which Adrian took advantage in both games winning 13-3 in game one and 11-1 in game two. In the 14 innings played on the day, the Bulldogs struck out 15 of Albion's hitters.
GAME 1 RECAP
Albion struck first in the top of the first inning on a single to left field scoring the leadoff hitter that began the day with a double.
Gus Weaks answered in the bottom of the second driving in
Aaron Valentine on a sacrifice fly. Albion bounced back and took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on another RBI single, but
Kevin Cardentey blasted a homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2. Weaks expanded the Adrian lead in the third inning on a 2-RBI single to lead 4-2.Â
In the fourth inning,
Ty Peck used his speed with the short Nicolay Field backstop and scored on a wild pitch to go up 5-2. Freshman
Ryan Davis homered in the fourth to drive in three more for the Bulldogs and lead 8-2. Albion scratched a run in the fifth, but another run for the Bulldogs on a passed ball was the answer in the bottom half of the inning. In the seventh inning, Peck drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle with the bases loaded to lead 11-3 and then a wild pitch and an error brought two more home to put the 10-run mercy rule in effect.
Andrew Giorno got the start for Adrian throwing 4.2 innings allowing three runs on five hits with a season-high eight strikeouts.
Luc St. Antoine got the win in relief helping the Bulldogs out of a bases loaded jam as he went 1.1 inning striking out a pair before
Tripp Russo closed things out with a scoreless seventh inning.
GAME 2 RECAP
Adrian picked up where they left off scoring five in the third inning of the second game of the day. Cardentey singled in a run which was followed by a RBI single from
AJ Miranda and a 2-RBI double from Valentine.
Easton Rogers added a RBI in the inning to make it 5-0. Albion scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, but it was all Adrian the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the fourth, Peck led the inning with a triple which was followed by another triple from
Don Goodes to lead 6-1. After Cardentey reached base, a double steal allowed Goodes to score to lead 7-1 after four innings of play. In the fifth,
Dylan Johnson ripped an RBI triple to lead 8-1 followed by a single from Peck and a sacrifice fly from Goodes to make it a 10-1 game. In the sixth, Rogers put the Bulldogs up ten on a RBI single to score Miranda and make it 11-1.
Joe Toth made his first start of the season going six strong innings allowing one runs on two hits with four strikeouts.
Tyler Usher finished the game for Adrian with a scoreless seventh inning.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs are currently scheduled for a busy week of baseball. On Monday, Adrian will travel to Hope College to resume the suspended game from last weekend followed by a doubleheader to wrap up the series. After that, the Bulldogs will face Trine University on the road in game three of the series before hosting Defiance College in a nonconference contest. First pitch for Monday at Hope is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
