ADRIAN, Mich. - At the Craft Tennis Complex, mother nature gifted the Adrian men's tennis team with a comfortable, sunny day and it served them well. After dropping a tough decision to Aquinas College on Wednesday, the Bulldogs (9-9, 3-3 MIAA) came right back with a dramatic 5-4 victory over Spring Arbor University on Thursday.
The action got off to a thrilling start in doubles competition.
Joey Quigley and
Whitman Hopper got the black and gold on the board with a tie-breaking 8-7 (7-3) win, their first-ever as a pair.
Despite the remaining two doubles bouts coming down to the wire, the Cougars would eventually pick up a set of points to move ahead 2-1 in the match.
In singles,
Sebastian Smith (6-5) and
Ryan Cuddy (10-8) garnered the lead for the home team with respective straight-set victories. After the visitors answered back to restore their one-point advantage, it came down to the final two duals at No. 1 and No. 6 singles.
At the first slot,
Brandon Falk (7-6) turned in a redeeming 6-3, 6-1 win over Bret Bentley to knot the match at 4-4, and set the stage for an exciting finish between Spring Arbor's Tim Lyon and Adrian's Zach Perry.
Lyon grabbed the lead with a 6-4 first-set win, but Perry (6-10) stormed back with a 6-4 set-win of his own to force a 10-point tie-breaker that he would ultimately emerge triumphant, 10-7 to seal the game and the match for the Bulldogs.
Adrian will conclude the 2021-22 season on Wednesday, April 27 at Hope College. Match time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
