ALLEGANY, N.Y. -- The Adrian College men's rugby team competed in the St. Bonaventure Midnight 7's Tournament on Saturday where they finished 3-2 losing in the Championship game. Adrian finished second in the tournament witch both losses coming to the same team.
Adrian started the day with Canisius College where they came away with a 48-0 blowout victory, and opened the day with a shutout on defense. The Bulldogs then went up against one of St. Bonaventure's two teams that competed. Adrian won its second match of the day 26-5. The Bulldogs wrapped up poll play against Notre Dame College from Ohio where they slipped up and lost 31-14.
The Bulldogs help a top-four spot in the standings and advanced to the semifinals. Adrian then took on the other St. Bonaventure team from the other pool. It became a tight one, but the Bulldogs came away with a 12-10 win to advance to the finals. Adrian was tasked again with Notre Dame College and in similar fashion fell by a score of 31-10.
"The only negative is that we were missing players to other circumstances," said assistant coach
Mark Phillips. "It was a good showing when we ran our system, we proved we can beat teams. We bounced back with a win against St. Bonaventure after losing to Norte Dame College a well known 7s rugby program. Hats off to St. Bonaventure for hosting and Notre Dame College for winning it all"
This is the second tournament for the Bulldogs this season with a solid finish a week ago, followed by a second place finish at St. Bonaventure, puts Adrian is good standing for a future at-large bid to New Orleans for the National Tournament in May.
Adrian's next contest is schedule for April 30 where they travel to Clarion, Pa. for a tournament hosted by Allegheny College.
