ADRIAN, Mich. - At Docking Stadium, the visiting Saints of Siena Heights University pulled away late from the Adrian women's lacrosse, taking the backyard-rivalry match-up, 21-14.
With a goal late in the second period, senior
Olive Stevens surpassed 100-career goals, and went on to record a team-high eight tallies for the second different time in her four-year tenure with the Bulldogs.
Unfortunately for the home side, Stevens' efficiency offensively was not enough to overcome a fourth-quarter splurge by the visitors.
After Adrian opened the final frame by cutting into the Saints' lead, the eventual victors quickly turned the tables with five-straight goals, ultimately putting the game on ice.
The black and gold opened the scoring on the afternoon less than a minute in, when
Cassidy McGeorge found a cutting Stevens who finished with a shot into the back of net. Four minutes later, the duo connected again, this time McGeorge beat the Saints' netminder on a brilliant set up by Stevens.
Siena Heights responded soon after, however, running four consecutive goals to go from down-two to up-two. Then, later in the quarter, McGeorge struck again to make it a 4-3 ballgame, but the Saints got it right back in the final minute of the frame to restore their two-goal advantage.
The Bulldogs kept within striking distance throughout the remainder of the first half, as Stevens contributed each of the home side's three second-quarter goals. Siena Heights, though, had its answers, and took a 9-6 lead into halftime.
Carlee Casteel,
Brooke Barabas and Stevens made up Adrian's second-half scoring, including three in-a-row early in the final quarter to give the 'Dogs a little extra life after trailing by as many as six goals.
The comeback effort did not hold up, nevertheless, as Siena Heights ran away late to clinch the game.
Along with Stevens' nine points, Casteel and McGeorge each contributed four points on a combined five goals and three assists.
With Sunday's result, the Bulldogs wrap up their non-conference schedule at 4-5, and will begin the in-league portion of their 2022 schedule on Saturday, April 9 when they host Kalamazoo at Docking Stadium.
