Bulldogs Win 61-50 Wednesday Evening After Career Nights From Weatherly and Phillips

Box Score
ALMA, Mich. – The Adrian College women's basketball team defeated Alma 61-50 Wednesday behind Ashlyn Weatherly's career high 19 points. Jordan Phillips also qualified for the Adrian College women's basketball all-time three-point percentage list after tonight. Phillips sits at 36.7% from deep, third overall in program history minimum 60 three pointers made.

How It Happened

After giving up 91 and 73 points in back to back games, the Adrian Bulldogs were desperately looking to get back to their winning ways Wednesday evening. Over the previous two games, the Bulldogs had conceded a total of 164 points, the most the Bulldogs would allow over a two game period this season.  Right from the opening tip, the Bulldogs committed to their defensive intensity against the Alma Scotts.

The focus on defensive intensity was evident after the Bulldogs allowed only nine points in the first quarter. Tonight marked the first time this season that the Bulldogs would hold an opponent under double digits after the first ten minutes of play.  Despite out-rebounding the Scotts 18-13, the Bulldogs failed to convert any points on seven first half turnovers from Alma.  At the half, the Bulldogs would only find themselves down by four points, after holding the Scotts to 11% (1 for 9) from behind the three point line.

To begin the second half, the Bulldogs fed off of their defensive intensity by turning defense into offense. The Bulldogs opened up the second half on a 7-0 run with the help of Bailey Taylor and Ashlyn Weatherly, who combined for the seven points to give the Bulldogs a 33-31 advantage with 5:52 remaining in the third. The Bulldogs would enter the fourth quarter with a 39-37 lead. With 8:31 remaining, the Bulldogs would cap off a extended 10-2 run after a Jordan Phillips layup.

With their victory tonight, the Bulldogs need only three more victories to capture their first double-digit win season for the first time since the 2016-17 season. In the 2016-17 campaign, the Bulldogs went 13-11 on the year.

Career Night For Weatherly
Tonight, freshman Ashlyn Weatherly put up 19 points after a 9-for-12 shooting performance from the field, marking a career high on the night. The freshman from Grosse Ile, Michigan also posted nine rebounds and was one rebound shy of her first career double-double.

Jordan Phillips Three Point Percentage Tracker
Jordan Phillips continued her career-high stretch of making at least one three-pointer in a game Wednesday evening, after nailing a three next to the Bulldog bench with 4:52 remaining in the game. Phillips improved her streak to nine consecutive games with at least one three-pointer made tonight. Phillips would bury another three pointer with 2:46 remaining to score double digits in the fourth quarter.  Tonight, Phillips drew her career total to 61 three-pointers made on 36.7% from deep. The sophomore from Saginaw, Michigan has now cracked into the Adrian College women's basketball record book for the first time of her career. After tonight's 2-for-5 performance from distance, Jordan Phillips qualified for the Adrian College women's basketball all-time three-point percentage list and now sits at 36.7% from deep. Phillips currently sits third all time in three point percentage in Adrian College women's basketball history.

Phillips is also on pace to enter the all time three-point field goals made list during the 2023-24 season. In order to sit alone in the tenth position in three-pointers made, Phillips must make a minimum of 89 three-pointers. Assuming she maintains her career average of 1.48 threes made per contest, Phillips should easily enter the top ten in three-pointers made in the Bulldog's record book next season.

Historical Notes
Entering tonight's contest, the Bulldogs had lost their previous nine games against the Scots. The Bulldogs last victory over Alma prior to tonight came in 2017, where the Bulldogs would defeat the Scots on the road 75-70.
