Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team played its annual game against the USA U18 National Team Development Program on Tuesday evening at the Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs came away with a 5-4 victory to snap the five-game losing streak against Team USA.
USA struck first on an early goal just over a minute played in the first period. Two and a half minutes later,
Matus Spodniak answered to tie the game 1-1. Later in the period,
Alessio Luciani netted a goal to give Adrian the lead. Spodniak recorded his second point of the game with an assist on the goal. USA went on to tie things up at 2-2 with plenty of time remaining, but
John Kaljian added an unassisted goal before the end of the period to lead 3-2 at the break.
In the second period, Adrian increased its lead to two.
Ryan Pitoscia took advantage of a Bulldog power play and scored on assists from
Ty Enns and
Austin Clyne to lead 4-2. Just over a minute later, USA scored to bring Adrian's lead back to one entering the third period.
USA went on to tie the game in the third period bringing the score to 4-4. Later in the period,
Mathew Rehding found an opportunity and scored the game winning goal with eight and a half minutes remaining. With time winding down, USA pulled its goaltender, but the Adrian defense kept them from scoring to pick up the victory.
Dershahn Stewart got the start in goal for Adrian on Tuesday night where he finished the night with 26 saves.
Tuesday's win marks the sixth time in program history the Bulldogs have defeated the USA U18 NTDP out of the 18 total contests. The win also snaps a five-game losing streak to USA which began on January 10, 2021 on the road.
Adrian will host a NCHA home series this weekend against Concordia University Wisconsin. The two-game series begins on Friday at 7:00 PM followed by game two at 3:00 PM on Saturday.
