Bulldogs Win Big On Senior Day, Route Belles 90-79 Saturday Afternoon

ADRIAN, Mich. — Four Bulldogs scored in double figures, including Kylie Skidmore, who had a game-high 18 points, and Kiara Wernette, who had a career-high 15 points in the Adrian College women's basketball 90-79 rout over St.Mary's College (IN) Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. 
  
How It Happened 

The Bulldogs began the first quarter with a tenacious defense, surrendering only 10 points to the Belles in the first 10 minutes of action Saturday. During the first, the Bulldogs would hold St.Mary's to a game low 26.67% from the field while as a team, they would double up St.Mary's by scoring 20 of their own.

The Bulldogs had a fantastic first half of play and shot 50% from distance. During the second quarter, the women's basketball team would lead by as much as 12 on three occasions, with the help of a fast start to the quarter. Before the first two minutes of the quarter had passed, Kiara Wernette and Makayla Clement combined for a quick and efficient seven points to put the Bulldogs up by double digits. In the second half of the quarter, the Belles went on a 20 to 13 run to bring St.Mary's within five points at intermission.  

After halftime, the Belles would cut the Bulldogs lead to three points after a made layup with 9:29 remaining in the quarter. Sophomore Kylie Skidmore would take matters into her own hands for the next two minutes as she went on a personal 7-0 run to put the Bulldogs ahead by 10 with 7:39 remaining in the third. The Belles would counter again, this time going on a run of their own to make it a two-point game with 1:32 remaining in the third. 

The women's basketball team was not going to let this game get away from them, especially on Senior Day. The Bulldogs would outscore the Belles in the second half after an all-around group effort. In the fourth, seven different Bulldogs scored to combine for a game-high 28 fourth-quarter points.    

The Bulldogs would score 20 or more points in every quarter. Today also marked the second time this season that the Bulldogs have recorded 90 points scored in a contest.   


Top Dawgs 

Senior's Kiara Wernette and Kourtney Crawford showed out on Senior Day: Wernette dropped a career-high 15 points this afternoon for the Bulldogs. In her 18 minutes logged today, Wernette shot 50% from the field (6-12) and added two free throws. Wernette's fellow senior Courtney Crawford also scored in double digits: Crawford would score 10 points after shooting an efficient 5-8 from the field in the Bulldog's victory over St.Mary's, marking Crawford's second double-digit scoring outing on the season. Additionally, sophomore Skidmoore was able to supply a game-high 18 points after shooting 50% from the field, including 1-1 from behind the arch. In her past five games, Skidmoore has ramped up her scoring: Since January 18 when Skidmoore dropped 21 points against Calvin University, she has averaged 13.6 ppg. Junior Jordan Phillips also continued her career stretch from distance. Today, Phillips improved her career high to a 12th straight match with at least one three pointer made. 


Historical Notes:

With today's win over St.Mary's, the Bulldogs now claim a 32-21 advantage over the Belles. Dating back to the 2012 season, the Bulldogs have won 15 out of the last 20 matches against their foes from Indiana. Additionally, with this afternoon's victory, the Bulldogs are on pace to have their first double-digit win regular season for the first time since 2016-17, when the Bulldogs recorded a 13-11 record. The Bulldogs currently stand at 9-11 with five games remaining in the regular season. This afternoon's victory marks the third time this season that the women's basketball team has won three games in four contests.
